Fight breaks out at 'Slope vs. Apollo game

Apparently a fight broke out in the fourth quarter of the Sunnyslope @ Apollo game. I wasn't there but my son was. He said that Bryson Mewhinney and a big from Slope got thrown out and Boo Boo Woods and a big from Apollo got tossed also. He said Woods and Mewhinney got tangled up and started throwing punches!

I don't know what AIA rules are when that happens but it can't be good!

DII appears to be wide open - updated Power Points

My have things changed since preseason.

Sahuaro is on a tear and SoAZ shares half of the top ten in power points at the halfway mark.

Tempe is probably at the top right about now and only sitting at No. 13 in Power Rankings - so the second half of the season is really going to impact the shape of state.

GC wouldn't even make it to state if the playoffs started today.

Typical statebound teams like Seton, Marcos, Salpointe, IRidge and 'tock need to ramp it up if they plan to dance.

Gonna be wild and crazy.

DII appears to be wide open - updated Power Points

McClintock Holiday Shootout Final Results

Thanks to everybody who helped make this years McClintock Holiday Shootout one of the best yet! It's unfortunate that the great play in the championship game between two very deserving teams was overshadowed by the serious injuries that took place. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with both Devin and Markus. Basha showed tremendous resolve rallying around one another after losing Kirby late in the first quarter. Perry showed great class by agreeing to run out the final minute of the game clock after the injury to Markus to make Bashas championship victory official. Has NAU left the building?

I was hopeful the new coaching staff up north would focus on locals to build their program. It's never happened in the past, and it seems unlikely now.

The locals are not getting much PT, but maybe as they progress over the years that will improve. Chris Miller was a stud at Greenway, figured he'd be in the mix a bit more as a soph. And a few locals that did go there have moved on - most notably DeWayne Russell, who is tearing it up at GCU.

Corona vs Sierra

Awesome game lastnite! Barcello seems to always play well in big games and did not disappoint. Much respect to Cody Riley, kid can flat out play. Kuiper was absent for most of the game but hit a clutch 3 late in the 4th qtr with less than a min remaining to give his team the lead by 2 I believe. Unfortunately nor Barcello and Bagley could hit their 1 and 1's to seal the game.

GCU Ends Non-Conference Play with Win over UC Riverside

http://gculopes.com/news/2015/1/4/MBB_0104152446.aspx?path=mbball

The Grand Canyon University men's basketball team (9-8) picked up an exciting 71-69 win tonight over visiting UC Riverside (7-7) in their final non-conference matchup of the season. The Antelopes used a strong performance from the charity stripe to secure the victory, their fourth in the past five games.

With the Lopes ahead by two and just 15.3 seconds on the clock, Royce Woolridge drained two free throws to make it a four-point game. UCR answered with two free throws of their own, but missed a three-pointer at the buzzer as the Lopes held on for the win.

DeWayne Russell led the team with 19 points, his eighth straight double-digit game. Woolridge added 18 points, just one point shy of his GCU career-high, while Joshua Braun had 15.

GCU shot 46.5 percent (20-for-43) for the game and made over half of their three-point attempts (7-for-13). The Highlanders went 23-for-66 (34.8 percent) from the floor and were equally as tough from beyond the arc, draining nine three-pointers.

The Lopes jumped out to an early 7-3 lead after limiting the Highlanders to a 1-for-7 mark over the first four minutes of the game. UCR kept it close for much of the first half before GCU opened an eight point lead, 29-21, with just over four minutes on the clock.

GCU led by four, 32-28, at the half after shooting 41.7 percent (10-for-24) compared to 31.3 percent (10-for-32) by the Highlanders. Woolridge led the Lopes with nine first half points, while Braun added eight.

After opening the second half on a 13-5 run, the Lopes extended their lead to 45-33 with 15 and a half minutes remaining. GCU led by as many as 13 points before the Highlanders closed the gap to five points, 55-50, at the 7:36 mark.

UCR pulled to within two points, 69-67, with 47.2 seconds to play after holding the Lopes to just three points for nearly two minutes. The two teams traded free throws as time continued to wind down, and a UCR three-point attempt that hit the rim stood as the final play of the game.

GCU will now open their Western Athletic Conference slate when they welcome Bakersfield to GCU Arena on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. Fans can listen to the action live on KXXT 1010 AM Family Values Radio or watch on Cox7.

GCU 71, UCR 69
