Gilbert Christian transfers ruled eligible

"Judge said AIA ruling to make Lightfoot and Licavoli ineligible was 'arbitrary and capricious and both suffered irreparable harm'."

Sounds like Mitch and Tony will be suiting up right away for Gilbert Christian. Both of those guys are good kids so you have to be happy for them.

However, this ruling could open the door to major change for transfers. The AIA is unable to enforce their own rules so something will change. I am definitely not an AIA supporter but how much more money can the AIA spend trying to uphold their rulings? This court ruling will undoubtedly lead to increased lawsuits from transfers all on the dime of the schools who fund the AIA. My guess is that the AIA will have to make the rules even stricter so that they are very clear legally and will be upheld in court. What an absolute mess!

On a side note, if I was Mike Bibby Sr., I would get my lawyer right over to the Superior Court judge that saw this GC case and present my case for Bryce Fisher to play. Fisher was denied for the exact same prior contact reason. The basketball community knows that GC's claim of first contact in May at a Canada tournament right after the filed paperwork was questionable. Club season started in March and all the Power teams, coaches & players, were together at tournaments in March and April. Fisher played for Team Bibby in the past so there was a prior relationship. What's the difference? Both transferred to a school where they knew/met the HS coach from their club affiliation. To me these situations are very similar and highly likely that the judge would rule in Fisher's favor.

Props to Fountain Hills

Just wanted to write a "feel-good" note and acknowledge something that usually goes unappreciated.

Last night we had a great game with Fountain Hills. Always appreciate playing them as their kids work extremely hard.

But, I am not writing about the game.

After the game was over. Coach Keating asked where their boys could put the chairs. One of my assistants was talking with him and answered his question. At that point, I went into the locker room. By the time I completed my after game activities as coach and AD, I was told that the FH boys not only put away all of the chairs, BUT also, went and got a garbage can and picked up all trash out of the bleachers before they left.

In many years of coaching, I have experienced teams that have done small things to leave the place in good order. But this was a clear example of one coach making a huge impression on his team by showing them what it means to leave a place better than when you got there.

Major Props to Coach Matt Keating and his boys! I was truly impressed as were many of our parents, coaches, players, and fans.

Another State Record Falls!! (Sierra Linda GBB)

Freshman Janae Gonzales, from Sierra Linda Girls Basketball, made 14 3-pointers tonight setting a new state record against Tempe tonight. The previous record was 13 according to AIA and Arizona Basketball Coaches Association records. She was 14 for 20 from the 3pt line, that's an incredible 70%. She finished the night with an amazing 51pts (tied for 8th in the state). What a great. performance from an amazing young lady. The Lady Bulldogs are currently 16-2 and ranked # 5 in Div. II, Janae leads the team in scoring at 17.7 points per game.

Brandon Brown - must read

Incredible piece by Obert on Brandon Brown.

I took some heat by omitting him from All State honors his senior year due to his conviction.

He was and is a good kid and has made the most of his situation.

Need to give credit to Coach Gordon for giving him a second chance. One more way JUCO provides opportunities that other avenues don't.

NC bball AVG OPP RATING is 9.79. Toughest schedule in AZ D1. Not getting wins but playing well and competing at a high level. Bus driver last night said, "after 15 yrs of watching NC Bball, NC is becoming a competitive program. Im proud to have been your driver."

Tides are changing at NC.

Possible State Record! Go Padres!

Marcos de Niza shot well last night in their win over Bradshaw Mountain. The AIA team records show 15 Threes for Shadow Mountain in 96 for 5A. 18 made Tres for Thunderbird in 2000 and 19 for Estrella Foothills. The Padres made 21 Threes last night! Record or not we needed to finally shoot the way we can.Great team effort with Sean Wood's consisitent double double again! Go Padres!

Cameron Stark 7 made Tres and Chris Wright with 7 also. Mason Stark made 6 and Joey Villa with 1. Cameron and Cris will join the school record board for threes that includes Paul Mohr and Jon Ziri along with Josh Todd and Robert Davis.

Sean Wood commits

This happened a week or so ago, but I was waiting on his acceptance to Embry Riddle.

With all his financial support from ER and the native community this comes to about $44K per year worth of an incredible education and the start of a new NAIA program right in our backyard.

Super props to Sean, his family, Coach Fun, Coach Stark, Marcos and the REZ nation.

Game Schedule: Tuesday, Jan. 13 - and a tidbit you didn't know

Tempe at PV could be the game of the day.

I tweeted out the other night that a varsity coached got booted from his frosh game and had to miss his varsity game that same night. It was Coach Salt, and without him they eeked out a late win against a tough Seton squad that doesn't have near the athletes the Buffs have. Stay in the building tonight Coach!

Game Schedule: Tuesday, Jan. 13

Tevian Jones - 2018 - Chandler

Nice looking freshman prospect, ranked in our top 10. Saw him tonight go 3/5 from the arc and threw down a break away dunk off of a steal. He can obviously knock down the set shot beyond the arc, but he does need to work on his shooting form a little bit. He is a 6-foot-4 wing/SF and has long arms.

Keep an eye on him, it will be worth it. He made a difference late in the game vs. Hamilton even though they lost the game.

The Dynasty: Article on Corona del Sol

Here's an article on the Corona dynasty. The author seems to think 2010 was the year the Aztecs came into power and he's right to an extent, but CdS has been relevant since the school opened in the early 80's.

Because of it's geographical location, diverse range of housing prices and cultural balance, the school offers many, many benefits other schools can't.

Really, the only thing that's kept Corona from being completely dominant over the decades was the Mountain View Toros and a six-year stretch of time from about 1997 through 2003/04 when a coach not named Duane was at the helm.

The Toros were a 800-pound gorilla on the Aztec's back for about 15 years in an almost intimidating manner. But Corona finally got the monkey off their back and haven't looked back since.

Now that Corona is on a dynasty roll they're going to continue to draw talent - there's simply no excuse to not be able to live within the school boundaries or attend from a more remote location.

Sammy Duane Jr. is an easy coach to play for; I can't think of the last time a talented player left his program.

Corona won't be beaten by an in-state school for at least four more years. And during that stretch there will be more Bagley's, Kuiper's, and Barcello's feed into the system.....kind of like what happened at Mesa Mountain View for years.

Mountain View's reign came to an end primarily due to the restrictive/exclusive LDS culture that permeates in the areas surrounding their campus. For decades, the church fed the program quality talent but as the neighborhoods have aged and decined, many LDS families are chosing to live in newer commmunities to the south. And without black families being able to feel completely comfortable in a religion that for over a hundred years excluded them, there's no back-up talent to take up the slack for the LDS exodus.

Gary Ernst will continue to keep Mountain View competitive, but their days are over as championship contenders. Once Ernst retires, the once mighty Toros will become just another also-ran.

So, there you have it folks. Get ready for Corona to keep running the table and if you're any other Division 1 school, set your sights on 2nd place.
