Player takes from CDS/DV plus Basha/Chandler

6'10" F 2018 Marvin Bagley CDS-All the superlatives have been said about him. I believe unless he has a major injury he will not only be a college star but eventually he will play professionally. I think most people believe that but never say it. Will he be a 1 and done lottery pick..time will tell..Sure looks like someone who would be one of those type of kids look like Marvin. His ability to put the ball on the floor and handle it for his size really sets him apart from all the rest. Most "BIGS" cant walk and chew gum..(JP line) let alone handle it.

I always say he's like a combo of Lamar Odom meets Chris Webber. Or how about just better version of Chris Bosh. Lofty comps for just a freshman.

6'61/2" W 2015 Dane Kuiper CDS-He is the guy that everyone overlooks in state. Funny that way. He is a great build at 200-210 lbs, super athletic, guards basically anyone on the court, super unselfish, can hit MR jumpers all day plus the 3 ball. Yet we don't talk much about him since he doesn't attempt 30 shots like others and doesn't score as much as others. The reality is--he plays like he should and plays like he will in college. Thats how college players play. Exactly what he does. Now I've heard many ppl saying he doesn't do it for me. Not aggressive enough--it may be true. But once again he plays a college game already. I believe people are sleeping on him. He should be in the Rivals150 IMO.

6'2" PG 2017 Alex Barcello CDS-This kid is a stud. He elevates high on his jumpers and is just a confident player. He lives for these moments and is a big time player. He chooses to score first then facilitate next. He can work the pick and roll at perfection and can get by his man and dish it to cutting players. He is a strong kid--people question how much better will he be in college compared to dominating HS ball. I believe he will just always contribute at any level after HS-LM/MM or High Major. The question will be does he want to be the man or a piece to the puzzle. High GPA kid too.

6'3" CG 2016 Tyrell Henderson CDS-Pure glue guy. Does everything well. No huge hole in game. Maybe not elite athlete like others but he can shoot it, handles the PG when they want Barcello to score and defends like a madman. He changed the DV game with his defense plus didn't miss a shot on day. 3-3, 6-6 FT.

JV
6'4" PF 2017 Shane Grier CDS-He has an amazing body--the Westview head coach(who I was sitting next to all night) said his body is identical to Dane Kuiper's body. Besides his obvious good features he has high skill level. He can hit shots from the 3 plus he has improved his handle and quickness since last year. He is a very good rebounder in his area and just plays the game the right way(the Corona way). He will be a good piece to the puzzle the next 2 years.

5'9" PG 2017 Dalen Dorsey CDS-Ultra quick defensive minded PG. His on ball defense is outstanding. His lateral quicks is amazing. He relishes the stopper role. He claps his hands and seriously gets into a defensive stance. Jumper is inconsistent--actually banked 2 FT's--crazy. Shows nice court vision. Came in from Indiana.

6'7" F 2015 Brandon Clarke DV-I said it before and it showed. Clarke is the only player that can effect Bagley in AZ. From blocking shots, handling the ball, taking it strong towards him and scoring with his jump stop and floating it up with what Dutch said(soft touch). Long kid--skinny--but when he fills out. He will play well at San Jose State. I love this kid. And it seems his improving heading into college as some kids level off. His best basketball is clearly ahead of him.

6'3" SG 2015 Quincy Taylor DV-Freak of nature. Best athlete in AZ and its not really even close. He had 1 dunk(that didn't count) I thought he was going to hit his head on the WAY DOWN he was so high..LOL…He basically threw the ball in!--Just insane. Good shooter when set. Solid defender--needs tighter handle but very good prospect. 1 of my favorite players to watch in AZ.

6'5" SG 2017 Caleb Simmons DV-Arguably hus best game I have ever seen him play. Simmons was everywhere. Super aggressive on defense and on the glass. He hit shots from perimeter plus just played tough and didn't back down. He was DV's most consistent player. He cemented his spot as one of the Top-10 players in his class.

FR game
6'8" C 2018 Steele Bennett DV-Real long and still growing. 1 parent told me he may be 6'9" now. Hard to tell since the freshman kids are so small. LOL. He can move up the court well and rebounds and blocks shots well in his area. He is a long ways away for major minutes on Varsity but looks to have bright future. My guess is he ends up close to 6'11".

5'10" SG 2018 Melek Alexander CDS-Real quick southpaw. Hits shots from MR and is starting to extend it to the 3. He was unmanned. His FR team isn't as loaded as last years team. They do have Bagley eventually haha. So he makes up for like 5 kids by himself. But depth wise--maybe 2/3 kids look the part. But you never know with the young ones. Anyway Alexander is a straight scorer. Smooth handle too.

The 2017 group on CDS is amazing!!!
PG Barcello 6'2"
PG Saben Lee 6'0"--INJURED
PF S. Grier 6'4"
PG D. Dorsey 5'9"
SF Seun Talabi 6'3"-Skilled scorer
SF Josh Onwordi 6'2"--track star leaper/runner
And Add Bagley..will be another elite team in 2017 too.

Scott's always right.

Corona stays solid with big win over Desert Vista

The game was hyped as the game of the year, and I would say that both teams came to play. At the end of the day Corona del Sol upheld their spot at the top with a win against Desert Vista, with a score of 71-57.

The place was absolutely packed to the max and I had to stand along the baseline because I did not heed the warnings and get there hours before tip-off like Gregg.

The game started off hot! Corona's Alex Barcello got things going by going two for two from beyond the arc. My first thought was "oh no, this might already be out of hand." But no, Desert Vista's Quincy Taylor got a loose ball near the basket with nobody around him and went sky high for a dunk off of two feet to show why he is arguably the most explosive and bouncy athlete in the state. Caleb Simmons, who played a solid game, scored in transition, with it still 6-4 in favor of Corona.

Desert Vista started out in an extended 1-3-1 zone, and a physical, defensive first quarter ended with a 16-11 Corona lead.

At this point Barcello was leading scorers with 7 points, and he would end with a leading 31 points. (Barcello has crazy talent)

The second quarter, however, showed that Desert Vista would maintain life throughout the game. They rallied to tie the game and even took a 18-16 lead early on. But Barcello answered back with another perfect looking 3-pointer and a one-handed, put-back layup during a fast break.

The first half ended with Desert Vista star Brandon Clarke getting into foul trouble and spending some time on the bench, and with Barcello doing his thing to shred seconds off the clock with multiple cross-over dribbles and a mid-range jumper at the buzzer. Corona finished the half with a 31-21 lead.

One of the smartest plays I saw all night was Barcello killing the time - he kept dribbling and pulling his man from left to right - he looked at the clock with 7 seconds and then didn't look at it again as he ran the time off to perfection.

The crowd was insane for this game. Desert Vista fans helped fill the house (although I heard that their student support for the 20-2 team has been noticeably poor at home this season). Come on Thunder that's my house. Corona students started out sitting but it almost seemed like it was meant to make a statement, because then they cheered their team on with deafening sound to counter the Thunder. Both fan sections deserve an ovation.

At the start of the second half I just hoped that the Thunder kept this game exciting, and they did. But not right away.

Corona stretched it out a bit more to a 35-22 lead early in the 3rd quarter. But Desert Vista made a run and cut the lead to 6 with a 35-29 score.

But then Corona kept doing their thing and a technical foul by the DV coaching staff (on the bench) stopped the DV momentum and Corona held onto control. The third quarter ended with a 46-39 Corona advantage.

The game still had excitement left. Despite Clarke remaining in foul trouble in the second half (who played great and showed why he is a great college recruit), DV was able to get the lead down to four points. They even had it within six points with half of the 4th quarter to play. But Corona was poised to close this one out. Desert Vista was forced to foul when the clock came inside of 2 minutes and they were down in double digits at times in the closing minutes.

This turned out to be, possibly, a preview to a big playoff match-up.

In my opinion it lived up to the hype. The game had great players that showed great skills in big moments. The gym was loud and it was one of the most energetic games I have ever seen at the HS level.

More player takes to come...

But to add to the awesome game - 2 of 3 contestants at this game hit their 2nd half-court shot attempt during half time!!!

Great Player @ Casa Grande, Gresyn Rogers

Great Game for Gresyn ( Baby Magic) Rogers against:

Casa Grande 57 CDO 47

35 points , 10 rebounds, 11 assists, leadership for our young team. The kids had fun" playing last night ! Everyone touched the ball, played hard defense, proud of my Baby Cougars, Dillon Ragsdale ( soph), Jesus Garcia ( soph) and birthday boy, Preston Brochs.

Junior Ty McKnight scored 5 critical points in the 4th quarter. Steady Guard, Jacob Persoon 12 points, played along with Baby Magic In the back court. Jamil Davis, Junior, always solid with 10 points, 12 rebounds.

Tough week, growing week; lost to Tucson Magnet at the buzzer, great coaching job by Doug with Cat Foothills against my Cougar, our only "lack of effort" loss.

Growing up for the players and coaching staff is tough but we keep our heads up and keep grinding. I really love and enjoy coaching my players at Casa Grande Union High School.

Up next, Home vs. Salpointe, January 27, 2015 @ 7:00 pm.

Casa Grande Cougars, Growing Up

Our Best Game Of The Year:

Casa Grande 86 Salpointe 66,

The last week for us has been a transition from playing like individuals to slowly becoming a team. Last week, after we "lost" to Catalina Foothills, we had to take a "gut check" among the players and coaching staff.

Last Thursday night, after watching Michigan State vs. Indiana State, the NCAA 1979 , Magic vs Bird, Men`s National Championship Game @ 4:00 am on youtube.com, I decided that we will play basketball the "right way". In addition, for those of you who are 55 years old ( I`m 56 yrs young), I watched a documentary on Red Holtzman, Coach of the 1969-70 NBA Championship Team, The New York Knicks.

I incorporated these "keys word" that we will use the remainder of my hopeful long career at Casa Grande Union High School Boys Basketball Program:

"HIT THE OPEN MAN" On Offense; "SEE THE BALL" On Defense, and provided My Cougars information on Cazzie Russell, the former Michigan College All American who was the 6th Man for the NY Knicks. Bill Bradley was a "better fit" to start, but Cazzie Russell provided a major spark off the bench. I also provided my Cougar team information on John Havlicek, the Great Sixth Man for the Boston Celtics ( 1962-1969).

Here are initial results last night:

Gresyn ( Baby Magic) Rogers, 18 points,7 assists, 3 blocked shots; Jacob Persoon, 22 points, 5 3 pointers, 7 assists, Jose Olivares, Our Team Leading Scorer who understood that his role changed to our Cougar 6th Man, 33 points, 7 for 8 from the 3 point line, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, great team defense. We beat a tough, tough Salpointe Boys Varsity Basketball Team last night.

I hope our Cougar Team moving forward will take on the basketball philosophy of the San Antonio Spurs and The Atlanta Hawks.

Clearly, this is most enjoyable boys high school basketball team that I`ve coached over the last 25 years.

Coach "P" @ The "U" & "The House Of The Rising Sun", Casa Grande Union Boys Basketball Cougars. Next game; Ironwood Ridge, Away, 7:00 pm.
