RETIRED COACHES NEEDED

The ABCA is looking for a few good men (Coaches) for the Senior All Star Games to be played at MCC, March 21st.
Anybody have Bill Farrell, Paul Nelson, Dough Harris, Kenny Trout, Rick Roth, Joe English, Mike Dyer, contact information. Tom Bennett and Larry Hughes have committed to coach in the games already, waiting on return calls from Don Petronovich, Royce Youree, Tom Bunger, and Buddy Doolen. Or do you have names you would like to add to this list?

Question regarding the "fraidy cats."

I've been watching closely as the AIA struggles to sort out what schools will be placed in Division 1 for the sport of football. (As of today, there are only 17.) The mere fact the AIA is sorting schools by each sport is a big enough joke by itself, but watching schools try to bail out of D1 in football is simply hysterical. What a bunch of unaccountable cowards!

Football programs at Hamilton, Mountain Pointe, Chandler, Brophy, Desert Ridge, Desert Vista and a few years back, Mountain View, built their programs from the ground up, the right way. And because they were consistently successful, the wuss schools in the division have been crying and pitching a fit like two-year-olds. Sad thing is, the AIA listened and now we're seeing a circus like no other time in history.

Instead of trying to build a strong, competitive program to compete with the "big dogs," the wuss schools have chosen to tuck their tails and run to the small doggie park.

So my question is, how long is it going to be before the wuss basketball programs start crying about Corona del Sol? Corona is in the middle of an era where they're going to win a historical seven straight D1 championships - maybe more. The writing is on the wall, it's just a formality. Only a completely unforeseen catastrophe will derail the dynasty Aztec program.

My second question would be, what programs would have the courage to stay in D1 basketball and continually have zero chance at the golden ball? I can only think of maybe a dozen.

*********************

A second topic for discussion should ya'll care to partake.

"Transfers" has been a HOT topic for at least a decade. And the AIA is doing nothing to curb it.

I know there are many, many parents out there who feel the best place for their kid to get the best exposure and have the highest chance for a college scholarship is at the larger division schools. "Gotta be in D1, no lower than D2" they say.

So with all this turmoil going on regarding divisional placement, do you think this is going to create more transfers, less, or about the same?

Basha 64
North 52

Started the season out at Chandler HS for the Tip-Off Classic. certainly two very different teams faced off in this one...

Game started out quickly as North went man defense and Basha went immediately to the post. Kendrick Gannon made a nice spin and finish off the left block on a reversal, followed by a Klay Stall seal on weakside for an And1... David Perez soon after, knocked down back to back threes and Basha pulled out a quick double digit lead. North struggled early trying to drive the huge Basha interior, but it wasn't until little Anthony Fernandez checked in that North got the lid off... North's #1 scorer Marco Gamez was stone cold and it woulda got ugly, but Fernandez knocked down a three, and then made two nice driving layups to settle them down. it was 22-11 after 1Q

2ndQ and North went zone... and Basha slowed the game wayyyy down, walking it up, spreading it out... North tried to trap out of it, and it went back and forth. Stall nailed a ft jumper for Basha, then a putback, then Gannon a putback, followed by a Nick Brewer three, but North answered with about ten fts in 2nd Q from the Bonus, and a Daniel Martinez three. we went to Half 35-24 Basha.

3rdQ started out much like the 2nd... North packin it in, Basha coughed it up twice early to start the half, and Marco Gamez woke up.... back to back threes and a nice floater by Fernandez, Basha needed a timeout. The zone was frustrating the Bear guards trying to get it inside..... finally, Back to back dunks by Klay Stall and Devin Kirby, and a tough drive by Antwan Ross in the gap, gave Basha a little momentum back, and we went to the 4thQ 43-38 Basha.

4thQ... well, the previous two quarters, the Basha guards, there was no dribble drive into the zone, it was all passing, but North decided to trap up top and all of sudden guys were splitting doubles and driving into the paint... another Stall dunk, another Kirby dunk... Antwon Ross caught a huge dunk on the break... it turned into a track meet! Gamez nailed another three, Fernandez made another driving layup... where was this action all game? Basha PG Chris Ahern finally took a shot with about a minute left and made a great driving And1 as he drove the middle and both defenders laid back this time to prevent another huge dunk, defense was late, and Ahern finished.. that really put a nail in the coffin for North. Basha wins 64-52.

Klay Stall led Basha with 17 and prob 10+boards. Gannon 13, Perez 8, Ross 6, Brewer 5, Ahern 5, Kirby 4, McGlothlin 4, Dall 2

Marco Gamez led North with 18. Fernandez 11.

Basha is the tallest team in AZ. has to be.... Kirby and Stall are obviously the names, but they also got 6'5" Kendrick Gannon, who's big n bouncy, as well as another big 6'6" athlete on the bench named McGlothlin... he looked good imo too! I know 90% of HS teams would die to have him... and he's 4th on Basha depth chart. man.

Better front runner talent vs deeper benches?

Some teams have relied heavily on their stars... But

Which teams have depth that they deploy on a regular basis, even against good teams, and still have success?

Which teams rely on building depth through letting some of their bench get minutes on JV instead and are confident they can step up if relied upon?

(this is not rhetorical - comment with any insight and let me know)

The question comes from watching my state favorite Corona. Against DV I think they played their main 5 for 90+% of the game, and maybe only went 7 deep. I know they won, but I am just thinking about the "what if" as playoffs come closer...

A lot of things to think about and get excited for in the coming weeks...

IT'S ALMOST GO TIME!!!

(for some teams on the edge of making the playoffs...It is go time right now baby!!!)
