Notes from the Horizon Holiday Hoops Invitational Tournament

Final day... very, very well run tournament... excellent hospitality
Horizon (8-4) vs Sierra Linda (8-3) in the championship game... the Huskies platooning is extreme... they run five new players in the game every 3-4 minutes... I guess to keep those notoriously crazy parents in check, although Coach Jerry Conner told me he did this at Shadow Mountain... there is a very large banner on the back wall at Horizon, with the team members pictures... prominent are the words sprint, shoot, press, and repeat... missing are the words pass and defense... three speeds are fast, faster, and oh my God... so I tracked the FG shooting percentages in this game... it's staggering... Horizon, by quarter, was 3/16. 6/24, 8/22, and 4/18... overall they shot 21/80 for 25%... the Huskies were 23/31 from the charity stripe... Sierra Linda was 6/17, 4/12, 7/15, and 5/12... overall 22/56 for 39%... SL was 16/19 from the free throw line... these two teams combined for 136 FG attempts!... on one play in the 2nd quarter, a Horizon kid ran down the court with the ball and two defenders in front of him... he launched a shot from NBA three point range... the rest of his team had barely started up court... Sierra Linda won the game 74-71... leading scorers for Horizon were: Joey Cipolletti (15 pts), Brandon Burke (13 pts), and Colin King (10 pts)... top scorers for Sierra Linda included: Jorge Acuna (27 pts, 18 in the 2nd half), Dontae Aguirre (12 pts), and Ahmire Gaines (14 pts).

All-Tournament team...
MVP - Sierra Linda 5-foot-8 junior Jorge Acuna
Sierra Linda 5-foot-8 junior Dontae Aguirre
Horizon 6-foot-6 Joey Cipolletti
Horizon 6-foot-3 senior Brandon Burke
Kellis 6-foot-4 senior Ilunga Moise
Marcos de Niza 6-foot-1 junior Cameron Stark
Marcos de Niza 6-foot-4 senior Sean Wood
North Canyon 5-foot-11 senior Alex Fernandez
Scottsdale Christian 6-foot-4 junior Corbin Lenderink
Buckeye 6-foot-7 soph Jacob Jefferson

I had a chance to visit with Frank Tresnak, whose son Kyle Tresnak is having a great time playing pro ball in Spain... Frank noted that his son is trying to learn Spanish so that he can understand what the coach is saying during timeouts... Kyle was twice awarded Big Sky All-Conference honors and Weber State made a trip to the NCAA Tournament his senior year... and how about this from the website... Kyle is the first player in Weber State history to record 1,000 career points, 500 career rebounds, and 100 career blocks... parents Frank and Ellen are the definition of class and loyalty.

GCU's Braun Named WAC Player of the Week

Grand Canyon University redshirt freshman Joshua Braun has been tabbed as the Western Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 15-21, as announced by the conference officetoday. This is the first weekly award for the Antelopes this season and the first career honor for Braun.

Braun averaged 18.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game en route to helping GCU to a 2-1 record last week. He shot 66.7 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from beyond the three-point line.

The Anthem, Ariz., native scored a career-best 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting in GCU's 82-80 loss to Incarnate Word on Dec. 17 and pulled down a career-high eight rebounds in the Lopes' 60-50 victory on Dec. 15 against Bethune-Cookman. Braun also played a career-high 39 minutes in the heartbreaking loss to the Cardinals.

Braun has now scored in double figures in his past three games and has five such games on the season.

The Lopes are back in action tomorrownight when they welcome perennial power New Mexico to GCU Arena for a 7 p.m. tipoff. The game can be followed live on KXXT 1010 AM Family Values Radio or Cox7.

AZ Heat expansion

Arizona Heat is expanding its program opening up three new divisions based out of Sedona red rock high school.

The 17U division will be run by CJ Sells, the new varsity head coach at Sedona red rock with Michael Sells past heat player as his assistant . CJ was my assistant for five years .

The 16U division will be run by Page head coach Russ Slabal with David Beery the Cottonwood Mingus head coach assisting.

The graduating seniors or 18s will be coached by Ricky Greer Winslow head coach as well as Kelly Smith head coach at Coconino and Jeff Ramirez the Northland prep varsity coach. This will allow all the kids in the eastern, northern and western part of the state an opportunity to play on a top-notch club basketball team and not having to travel all the way to Phoenix.

If there are any other high school coaches who would like to participate in the Arizona heat program please contact me at 480-213-0167 .

If you have any players sophomores juniors or seniors that deserve an opportunity please recommend them to me.

The Heat will maintain three divisions based in Phoenix with Percy Kincaid and Courtney Martin the varsity coaches at Desert Heights prep coaching the 18s.

I have offers out to three varsity high school coaches in the valley to coach my 17s with me and Mike Magee who played for my very first team. Mike is the JV coach at Desert Heights prep school.

Lastly, I'm merging my 16s with Arizona Future Stars.
The 16s will enter tournaments called Arizona Heat Future Stars bringing the best of our two programs together. I will be coaching the 16s as well with Peter Smith the assistant coach from Payson.

If any high school coaches would like an opportunity to join the Arizona Heat program or have any players that they would like to recommend , please contact me.

McClintock vs Gilbert Christian

Was in Tempe tonight and saw there was a game so I dropped in on McClintock vs Gilbert Christian. Slow, sloppy start turned into a crazy finish. The GC bench had more guys not in uniform than dressed. Tonight, even Nate Graville was in street clothes on the bench. Also, where is Davion Green? Maybe I'm late to that party but this is the first time I've seen McClintock and he wasn't there. Big loss for the Chargers who have no size. The 6-4 Battle was the biggest player in the game on either side so put on your track shoes for an up and down night.

Or not. The game was very slow and choppy for the entire first half. McClintock struggled to shoot the ball from the outside allowing Gilbert Christian to hold a slight lead for most of the first half. GC even switched to a 2-3 zone for most of the 2nd quarter which slowed it down even more. Amiri actually hit the most contested 3 of the half late but GC still held a 23-20 halftime edge.

The 3rd quarter started to get a little flow as GC jumped out to a 14 point lead early on but McClintock immediately answered on a 12-0 run to get right back in it at 34-32. After that, it was back and forth until the final buzzer. Malique Washington started to assert himself on the offensive end for the Chargers and Dontez Thomas was making plays for the Kinights. In a game full of talented guards, Thomas was the star of the night. Throughout the game, he seemed to always make a play to answer a McClintock run. He took the ball to the basket and hit mid range jumpers throughout the game.

Late in the 4th quarter, GC finally made an effort to get the ball to Satterwhite in the post. The smaller Washington was guarding him the entire night. Cam scored on back to back possessions but McClintock answered each basket. McClintock was down 52-50 with the game winding down and they cleared it out for Malique Washington who calmly knocked down the 18 ft jumper with about 15 seconds left in the game to tie it. The Knights inbounded the ball quickly. As they crossed half court, the Chargers left GC's Jimmy White all alone on the baseline under the basket. White received the pass and shot a one footed type floater from about 5 feet out and nailed it. The buzzer went off and GC stormed the court. The refs awarded McClintock a timeout after the make and added 2 seconds back on the clock. The Chargers passed the ball to half court and threw up a desperation 3. GC made a little contact with the shooter who fell down but the ref said it wasn't a foul. GC pulled out the 54-52 win.

McClintock struggled at the FT line all night and GC hit most of theirs, especially in the 4th quarter. Not sure of the stats but the game was probably won/lost at the line. Satterwhite ended with about 22-24 pts and Thomas was proabably around 20 himself. Amiri and Malique were both around 20 for the Chargers. Freshman Jaden Lee didn't score a point. I've seen him in the past and he really looked lost playing the pg for GC. I can only remember him driving to the basket once the entire game and he hardly shot the ball. He was trying to set up the plays all night. Big weapon that is not being used, especially with the guys they have out.

When a transfer really works

Tons of talk and debate around here over the years about transfers and sports.

I won't name names but last year a top multi-sport athlete transferred schools - huge boost for the receiving school, huge loss for the sending school. The athlete had some issues in the classroom, and I didn't know if this kid was on the path to qualify - he's a high major prospect. After talking to one of his coaches this morning I was informed his academics are going great and he's done a 180.

That is a transfer I can support all day long. It has to start in the classroom, otherwise it doesn't matter how talented you are in sports - you won't get very far if you don't have the grades and work ethic in the classroom.

Sunnyside 39-Cienega 41

SHS: 16 5 9 9 39
CHS: 6 9 10 16 41

Cienega Leaders: Johnson 22, Moody 5
Sunnyside Leaders: Duarte 10, Ozuna 10,

Game of runs for us, we started with a 14-2 lead, Cienega clawed back to within 3 just before half until Silva hits a 3 at buzzer to give us a 6 point lead. We started out 5-0 in the 3rd quarter and at one point built the lead to 13, but Cienega fought back. They nailed 4 threes in the fourth quarter, Johnson hit two in the last 20 seconds, the last to give them the win with .8 seconds left.

In the end too much Johnson, He was a stud and the difference.
