Oh boy

It's going on four months since our last player prospect rankings update - so it's almost time to head to the basement again for the next version.

The second half of the high school season, and spring club ball has changed things up again.

And it's hard for me to even say this - but a look at 2019 is right around the corner.

Holy moly.

1st NCAA Live Period of 2015

This weekend is the first NCAA live period for 2015 and most of the top players in AZ will be traveling out of state to play in front of college coaches from across the country. For those who like to keep track and high school coaches interested in tracking how their guys are doing, here is a list/link to most of the tournaments that AZ club teams will be attending this weekend. You can follow scores, see gym locations, game times, etc.....

This kid impressed the crap out of me today in Vegas! I am a head varsity girls coach, but in spring anf summer enjoy running a team under Justin Allen's Passion4Ball. I truly beleive this very skilled 6'2" athlete will emerge this offseason as a top 30 player in his class. He has grown 5 inches in a year and is an elite defender! Copper Canyon has another high level 2017 prospect!

AIA Basketball Advisory Committee Meeting 04.09 - MUST READ

BELOW IS THE SUMMARY AND COMMENTS FROM THE AIA BASKETBALL ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING HELD YESTERDAY THAT WAS SENT TO ME BY COACH FAZIO (AGENDA AND PROPOSALS LINKED BELOW - and I did not call those guys knuckleheads - Coach Fazio did!):
___________________________________________________________________

Todd pretty much summed it up. The only thing that I will add is that the Basketball Advisory Committee did in fact send a recommendation in to the Executive board saying that we are 100 percent in favor of the Division I proposal. The next executive board meeting is April 20th. Whether they will look at the committee's recommendation at this time and vote on it or wait until we sit down and talk with Dr. Slemmer about it on April 23rd is yet to be determined? All the best!

Subject: AIA Basketball Advisory Committee Meeting - Update

Hi Coaches -

I want to fill you in with what was discussed in the Basketball Advisory meeting yesterday. The meeting went as well as it could have. We are cautiously optimistic about it...

The meeting agenda is attached.

In attendance:
Ron Halbach: AIA
Michael Fowler: Committee Chair (Higley District AD)
Steve McDowell: Committee (Gilbert District AD)
Mark Nold: Committee (Chandler HS, Boys Basketball)
Ron Honsinger: Committee (Mogollon HS, Principal)
Lonnie Tvurdy: Committee (Pusch Ridge Christian, Athletic Director)
Julia Six: Committee (Valley HS, Girls Basketball)

Other Knuckleheads also in attendance:
Mark Wood, Liberty HS, Boys Basketball
Gary Ernst, Mountain View HS, Boys Basketball
Charlie Wilde, Pinnacle HS, Boys Basketball
Matt Hooten, Brophy Prep, Boys Basketball
Todd Fazio, Red Mountain HS, Boys Basketball
Shane Burcar, Mesa HS, Boys Basketball
Rick McConnell, Dobson HS, Boys Basketball
Stephen Moss, Xavier College Prep, Girls Basketball

The committee went over each division for girls and boys basketball and what the state playoffs would look like with the 30% rule. The playoffs cannot be less than 12 teams. So for Division 1 girls with 23 teams, 30% is 6.9. Boys (27 teams) is 8.1. However, the least amount of teams that would qualify for the state tournament is 12. So, as it stands right now, 12 teams will qualify for the state tournament.

The committee allowed us to present our proposal. Since we have not met with Harold Slemmer yet, the committee could not vote on the proposal but we could have a "discussion" about it. We are meeting with Dr. Slemmer on April 23rd.

State Tournament: We presented our proposal of 100% participation in the state tournament. The main reason that came up for this, is that many schools petitioned down, and were granted to be placed in a lower division. That was not the case in other divisions. This makes Division 1 unique. Schools that did not decide to run away from the competition should not be punished. All of the committee members were in favor of the proposal.

Sectional Tournament: In our original proposal, we had 3 sectional tournaments, with top 8 in each section (all 7 in girls sections) to be played at higher seed. Power points remain the same throughout the sectional tournament for seeding for the state tournament. All of the committee members were in favor of the proposal. It was not explained why they might be looking to eliminate sectional tournaments for Division 1 and 2 as it states in the agenda.

Game Days: We briefly discussed the importance of getting back to Tuesday/Friday games. The committee agreed but not much came from that.

Overall, the meeting went as well as it could. Like I said, we walked away feeling cautiously optimistic. We still need to meet with Harold Slemmer about it and it still needs to be voted on by the Basketball Sport Advisory Committee (which they all were in support of yesterday) and the Executive Board, which is the big one. So there is still quite a bit of grass to mow.

It is important to note that Mr. Honsinger, Mr. Tvurdy, and Ms. Six, all small school reps were in support of this. They all stated that if that is what Division 1 needs to do, we are in full support. There wasn't a small school vs. large school undertone at all...which hasn't always been the case. We are very lucky to have the committee members that are on there!

Mark Nold and Mark Wood - please add anything that I missed or messed up!

We will keep you all in the loop as we move forward.

Thanks -

Scottsdale CC Men's Basketball Inks Eight For 2015-2016 Season

Men's Basketball Inks Eight For 2015-2016 Season
Men's Basketball - Fri, Apr. 10, 2015 at 12:55 PM

The Scottsdale Community College Men's Basketball team has made a splash today with the signing of eight student-athletes.
Coach Mark Bunker is proud to announce his initial signing class for the upcoming 2015-2016 season. The Artichokes signees will have some familiar names and faces to go along with some nice additions to the roster.
Devin Nelson-Foster (FR/Seattle, WA)
The third team All-Conference guard will be back for his sophomore year to help lead the artichokes to what hopes to be a special season. Nelson-Foster led the Artichokes in scoring with 14.8 ppg and was second on the team in rebounding at 5.2 rpg. Nelson-Foster will likely be an early candidate for the ACCAC conference player of the year.
Trent Molesworth (FR/Mesa, AZ)
Molesworth was a key member and started all but one game for the Artichokes this past season. The forward will look to build off his stellar freshman year which had him second on the team in scoring with 11.8 ppg and led the team in rebounding which was good for 8.6 rpg. Molesworth will be one of the conference's top returning players and at 6'7" he will continue to hear from 4-year colleges from all over the country.
Keith Brower (FR/Hesperia, CA)
The converted wild-land firefighter is looking to build off of a successful freshman season. Brower came off the bench the majority of the year and brought leadership and toughness that the team rallied around. As a freshman, Brower was voted to be a team captain, and Coach Bunker will look for him to increase his productivity this coming season which led him to average 3.0 ppg and 2.8 rpg.
Edgar Barela (FR/Mesa, AZ)
Barela will be back to continue his deep shooting and instant offense role that he had this past season. Barela had an up and down year but managed to start eight games and averaged 5.9 ppg. Barela will look to increase his numbers and be a lock down defender for the Artichokes on the perimeter.
Dechaunte Wilson (FR/San Francisco, CA)
The ultra quick and athletic combo guard looks to do big things in his final season at Scottsdale Community College. Wilson had moments of greatness this past season, but lacked consistency to continue to move forward. That being said, Wilson was able to start five games, average 4.1 ppg, and shoot a team high of 41.7% from the 3-point line.
William Donovan IV (FR/Los Angeles, CA)
Donovan IV will be back at SCC for his sophomore campaign and look to develop into a more key role for the Artichokes. Donovan IV came off the bench the majority of the year and in many games made a great impact for the Artichokes with his scoring ability. Donovan IV averaged 3.6 ppg last year and looks to increase those numbers. As an excellent student-athlete, Donovan IV served on the SCC Athletic Leadership Council as a freshman and was a Presidential Scholarship Award winner.
Westen Ziegler (FR/Round Valley, AZ)
Ziegler chose to red-shirt his initial year at SCC and the results look like they have been paying off. The 6'4" wing has added 15 pounds of muscle to his frame and added a few more inches to his already staggering vertical leap. The former high school Division Three Section Player of the Year will make an immediate impact to the depth chart for the Artichokes, and Coach Bunker expects big production from him on both ends of the floor.
Greg Minor Jr (FR/Louisville, KY)
Coach Bunker is excited to add depth to his guard positions with the addition of Minor Jr. Minor Jr, is a transfer from a top-tier 4-year institution at Indiana University-Southeast that went (30-5) and will look to finish his sophomore year playing for the Artichokes. Minor Jr played in 32 games and starting 2 of them for the Grenadiers and was able to contribute 3.7 ppg as a freshman. Minor Jr has an elite level of athleticism that will allow him to make an immediate impact on both ends of the floor for the Artichokes.
Coach Bunker and the Artichokes will continue to add players throughout the Spring and Summer, stay tuned for additional information on the men's basketball team.
