Bigfoot Hoops Tournament

Noah Baumann played the best basketball in the tournament. Each averaged 30 points a game. In the game against one of the top teams in the tournament the 702 team in Vegas, Baumann had 33 pts. Team Phoenix played at an amazing level considering they are all 15 and 16 year old freshman and soph primarily. The team went 2 and 1 in back to back 17u certified tournaments. They end up losing to a Utah team that lost to the LV prospects by 1. Team Phoenix led my 13 points just ran out of gas.

High Scoring Point Guards - No Fun to Play With?

I've noticed over the decades of watching high school basketball that teams with high scoring point guards seldom win state championships. When a team's highest scorer is the PG, there's often a chemistry issue that prevents the highest level of team success.

Yes, there are exceptions....Mike Bibby was Shadow Mountain's high scorer back in the 90's and his team won it all. And recently, Alex Barcello is a high-scorer who led his team to a title.

Barcello's team had oher options though in Dane Kuiper and Marvin Bagley.....Bibby did not have potent scorers like Barcello.

But here's my point...........over the years I've heard rumors, innuendo and even comments made directly to me (by players) that some high scoring PG's are not fun to play with.

Heck, we've all played on teams with a ball hog, and it's not that much fun, right? We all want our "touches."

I'll cite a couple examples for the sake of conversation.

Jahii Carson - even though he was my all-time favorite player to watch at the high school level - was a high scorer who couldn't win a state championship and his first two years at Mountain Pointe were well-documented as Jahii being an alienating teammate. Even when Jahii went on to ASU, the two teams he played on lacked chemistry because Jahii's focus was getting his 20 ppg.

Markus Howard recently left his Perry teammates for the supposed greener pastures at Findlay Prep.......it's been rumored lately his former teammates didn't like playing alongside him because he took too many shots.

And I'm hearing rumblings that Barcello isn't all that much fun to play with either.

Playing the PG position is a tough chore. It's hard to find that right balance between getting teammates involved and active on the offensive end yet then being able to take over a game if needed.

Personally, I think the PG should average about 10 to 12 ppg for optimal team success. Nothing wrong when the PG goes off for an occasional 20 to 30 if the team wins.....and Barcello's teams have sure been doing a lot of winning.

Why?

Why do high major prospects feel the need to transfer out of high school to a national prep team?

They have the talent, offers, and all the other intangibles that will secure them a solid place at the college level, so why end the high school experience and the fun and lifetime memories that come with it?

Are parents and 'handlers' steering this boat? Does switching to a top prep school really improve their game to justify the loss of their high school experience?

I'm sure looking back many of the players who have gone on to successful college careers look back and cherish their high school days more and more. It's becoming a thing of the past. From the simple things like printed box scores in the newspaper to living the high school dream - it's all disappearing.

No wonder these top high school coaches are calling it quits.
