Gilbert Christian's Keener wins 800th game, selected to coach McDonald's All-American on same day

https://www.maxpreps.com/news/Y3Fge...-coach-mcdonalds-all-american-on-same-day.htm

Kinda sad this never even got mentioned on here. Between moving and going back to school I haven't been on here in a bit. The McDonald's All-American Game!!! National recognition at the highest level and not a peep?

I've said it before, best coach in AZ by a wide margin. If you're a basketball parent making a choice on where to send your kid this is an easy one. His track record is amazing, and amazingly consistent. Produces well spoken, quality young men that play after HS at all levels, and succeed in life well beyond their playing years. He is also a history teacher at GCHS and great role model.

The disclaimer: For the butt hurt who take this as a slam on other AZ coaches, it is not. There are other great coaches in AZ, just none with a track record that compares to Coach Keener's. Comparisons are welcome, what are the other best track records in AZ???

Player of the Year: Fallou Diagne, Tri-City Christian Junior
Tri-City Christian junior Fallou Diagne averaged 18.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.3 blocks per game while shooting 60% from the field and 72% from the FT line helping the Warriors to a 24-2 record. The versatile, 6’11” big man saw a huge improvement from his sophomore year where he averaged 7.5 points and 6.2 rebounds. Fallou had his best games against the toughest opponents scoring from all three levels and protecting the paint on the defensive end. Diagne went for 20 points (7-10 FG), 8 rebounds, 3 steals vs state champion Eduprize Prep. Two big games over defending champion Skyline Prep with 34 points (13-18 FG), 13 rebounds, 3 blocks and 25 points (9-13 FG), 11 rebounds, 3 blocks in the State Semifinals. Fallou put up 26 points (9-12 FG), 12 rebounds, and 7 assists against Bella Vista National Blue and 19 points, 15 rebounds in the State Quarterfinals over Maya HS.

Coach of the Year: Jason Fraser, Skyline Prep
Skyline Prep head coach Jason Fraser was in his first season for the defending state champions. The Bengals graduated 10 seniors from the previous year so Fraser had to rebuild the entire varsity roster. Coach Fraser starred at Villanova in his college playing days and was recently coaching at the professional level before taking over at Skyline Prep. His team showed dramatic improvement throughout the season. The team entered the state tournament as the 14 seed and advanced all the way to the state semifinals knocking off 3 seed Desert Heights and 6 seed AZ Compass before falling to 2 seed Tri-City, 66-51. Skyline Prep finished the season 15-9 with a solid foundation for the future under Coach Fraser.

Remember SoAZ Insider? He says..

The man once known as "SoAZ Insider" says that with the super well-coached AAU Team at Shadow Mountain now done hoarding State Titles the next two 4A Gold Balls will be coming back down I-10 to Southern Arizona. Salpointe next year and then Foothills the year after.

He also says Salpointe's PG Evan Nelson is the best player to ever suit up as a Lancer. Ever.

Prep kids definitely make it a different dimension of players.
There is a reason I do AIA/CAA rankings then do prep rankings.
95% of those kids are not from AZ.
But should I penalize them? IDK

I guess it doesn't matter but the local AZ kids seem to be pushed aside somewhat.
Most college coaches are not going to many of the local AZ schools--they are all just showing up to the prep schools.
As a scout I obviously have to watch any talent that is in the state--but it don't mean I am thrilled the way this is going. Especially the AIA kids who went to these prep schools.

I hope the AIA comes back strong but it looks like it is slowly fading---time will always tell....

Thoughts??
