Holiday Hoopla recap-Day 1, 2 & 3

So instead of my weekly recap..I decided to post in here for this week and take you guys through my 4 days..or at least Day 1..if I have time I will write about each day.

I'mt not as disciplined as Mullins, but I remember a few tidbits. I normally could care less what the score is and I am just watching the players movements and overall talent. Here we go:

Game 1
I started on Friday 2:30 PM 12/26 at Mesa Mountain View for the VMBC. 1st up was Gilbert Christian vs St. Mary's. I was sitting with Kenny. We are thinking this would be an amazing game considering a good D1 team w a star PG Shaver vs a good D2 team w a star Satterwhite. Unfortunately, the 3rd play of the game after he already hit a sick crossover pull-up 3, Shaver was on a fast break and got hit a little in air and landed way out of bounds and into the wall area. Near the wall there was a huge metal brick which he landed on. Right near his hip. Marcus Shaver never played the rest of the event. He has a deep contusion near his hip. Very unlucky to see that, then the people running the place removed the brick all together. Not sure why it was there-it may have been holding up 1 of the signs..not sure.
Anyway we move on in the action. Satterwhite dominates the 1st half with 19 points for a 5pt lead at 32-27 for GC. He was hitting some nice pull-ups from all over the court.

2nd half for SM was the 3ball without their playmaker. Isiah Walton, Jon Rivera and Carlos Nosie hit a combined 7 3s to keep them in the game, but it was too much Dontez Thomas. DT had 13 points and 5 steals in the 2nd half. No true ball handler for SM made DT's job easier and he went off. Satterwhite was a decoy and only attempted 2 shots in half. He did add 4 assists plus 1 statue of liberty dunk Mullins called it. It was incredible!!!! I'm older and said it was like Dr.J coming from way out and stretching his 7'1" wingspan out and throwing it down near a player(who kind of moved out of the way).

Satterwhite 23 4 assists 2 steals
D. Thomas 22 5 assists 5 steals--MVP of game.
Jon Rivera 12 pts

Btw 6'8" 2018 KJ Hymes is huge! Like around 17 size shoes long arms. Dad is a massive man-huge huge hands. Could be 7'0"? Be fun to track him.

Game 2
4:00 PM has Chaparral vs Tempe
1st half was all Chap led by Hoffer (12) and Nudo (10). Jones and Gant were solid too in 1st half with 10 and 9 respectively.

2nd half had Chap lead at close to 15 and then the floodgates opened for Tempe. This was fun!! It seemed like Chap stopped playing defense. Or Tempe just had a 2nd gear they couldn't physically hang with.
DeLano Jones hit 5 3s in a row basically plus Bilal Muhammed hit 2, Manny Gant hit 1 and Tempe actually had a 80-77 lead. Chap tried to tie it up but to no avail.

DeLano finished with 27 clutch points.
Gant 25 points.
Nudo 25 but missed shots-didnt look himself.
Hoffer 22 pts
6'0" 2016 G Bilal Muhammed 11
6'2" 2015 G Kalun White 10

Game 3
5:30 PM has Red Mountain vs Pinnacle…Red Mtn 63-55 win.
I didn't take great notes for this one but I can tell you this. This game was all Red Mountain style of a game. Grind it out, solid possessions, smart ball, move ball for open shooters and efficient.
Pinnacle didn't shoot particularly well and RM played physical ball.
5'11" 2016 PG/RB for football Desi Ethridge was really good in this game. He scored 21 points (7/9) with many clutch shots along the way.
Jalen Jenkins had 9 points(4/7) 5 assists and 2 steals.
Kapono Enos(shooter) scored 11 points (5/8)

Pinnacle stats
Trevor Baker 11 pts--didn't play well though.
Jeff Kenney 15 points--only player I thought had a good game for Pinnacle.
Ben Wahlberg 10 points--just ok.
Nick Mains 6 points--not bad.

Game 4
7:00 PM MTV vs Gilbert..someone already documented this game..Amazing shot at buzzer in OT by 2016 6'1" PG Tommy Kuhse. MTV won 68-67. Kuhse is a nice looking passer..He had 5 assists in the game and he is a very cerebral player. Unorthodox release on his jumper but obviously goes in.
Balanced attack by both teams:
Gilbert
Bowling 15
Nicolds 13
Agostino 15
T Moore 12
MTV
T Crider 14
Kuhse 11
D Beecher 9
Jowaiszas 10

Game 5
8:30 PM Corona vs Imhotep (PA)..Someone also talked about game..CDS pulled away late but close game in 1st half led by GCU little brother Daron Russell. 2017 5'8" PG. He had 18 in 1st half..No answer for him..he got leg cramps in 2nd half..CDS went on huge run then he came back in..started fighting back..another PA player got leg cramps as well..too much Bagley in end..
Russell 28
Carlyle 16

Bagley 20 14 rebs 4 blocks
DK 16 7 assists
Barcello 16 4 assists
Henderson 10
Peat 15

Pinnacle over GC, Mesa Mountain View over Tempe takes

Pinnacle over Gilbert Christian, 59-49

Both teams came out playing very tight man to man defense, but Pinnacle was just a little too deep and too powerful for Gilbert Christian. They have three contributors that are 6-6 or taller and they played a very physical game. Although GC only lost by 10, the whole game definitely felt like it belonged to Pinnacle.

Pinnacle:
AJ Elliot - JR - He is a very thick and strong 6-foot-6 that utilizes his strength for physicality. He is a lefty that likes post up with his back to the basket. He made some good moves to get the ball in the basket, but he certainly favors going to the left. Still though, he was efficient at scoring down low.

Ben Whalberg - SR - He was the other 6-foot-6 (maybe just under that). He is also strong and does not shy away from contact down inside. Although he does not have a ton of speed he is committed to running the floor and filling the outside lane in transition. He also showed a nice mid range jump shot. He elevated and had good form with a high release at the top of his jump. He hit two jumpers back to back.

Nick Mains - JR - He is 6-foot-8 and long. He definitely needs to add weight but he can survive as a perimeter shooter. He has a smooth shot out to the 3 point line. Still, he was able to fight for some rebounds and do some things inside.

Trevor Baker - SR - At 6-foot-2 he is a guard with a high IQ. He won't wow you with his athleticism but he just knows how to get the job done. He can shoot and take care of the ball. He seemed to do just about everything right in the game.

Randy Bronner - JR - He is a great looking athlete and has good height for a guard at 6-foot-4. He did a little of everything and is capable of playing the 1, 2, or 3 position. I would like to see him play a couple more times but I liked what and I think so did the coaches that were in attendance.

Gilbert Christian:
Nate Graville - So - His game is really coming along. At 6-foot-7 his skill set is broadening. He was able to score from outside with the shot and down low. His role has certainly expanded with the absence of Lightfoot and his game has grown from it. He should have a nice high school career and play at the next level.

Dontez Thomas - JR - Thomas is quick and fast with and without the ball in his hands. He showed his quickness right away and then showed straight away speed on the fast break. He also appears to be a knock down shooter. He has an elevated jump shot that extends out to the three. He hit two pull-up threes with a defender on him. He will likely jump into the rankings when they get updated at the end of the season.

Cameron Satterwhite - JR - I have talked about him before, and he pretty much showed his usual stuff. He is a long athlete and looks to now be at 6-foot-4. He has all the tools to be deadly on the wing or at point.

Tempe over Mountain View, 87-75

I can sum up this game with one stat line -- 13 of 17 shooting from the three-point line. Their shooting from mid range was equally as accurate. Lights out! Who was hitting all of those threes you ask? Everybody. Trey Holley, Bilal Muhammad, Emanuel Gant, and DeLano Jones were all hitting them. When a team is shooting like that against you it is tough to win. Tempe also did well at getting into the passing lanes and transitioning steals into fast break lay ups.

Tempe:
DeLano Jones - SR - He came out firing right from the start. His defender tried to slip a pass but it got buy him and Jones took one dribble to the basket and pulled up for a jump shot. If he is not the definition of lights out shooter then I don't know what is. He was hitting from all over the court. He also has a good handle. He looks barely under 6-foot but he has quickness and speed. He finished with 28 points. A college coach that was watching the game must not have realized that it was a live feed, because he was texting Gregg to go up and talk to him during the game.

Trey Holley (SR) and Bilal Muhammad (JR) both have similar traits. Similar size and build, similar speed and quickness. They were both active on both ends of the court and they limited their mistakes to a few.

Emanuel Gant - SR - He is listed at 6-foot-3 but his build makes him appear bigger. He is strong so he is able to score down in the post, but he was just as lights out from the three point line as anyone else. On two consecutive possessions he brought the ball up and put up an immediate three-ball. He finished with 25 points. He doesn't have a lot of speed, but Football is his main sport (Quarterback).

Mountain View: These players were tougher to read because of inconsistency in their play.
Tommy Kuhse - JR - At point guard he was the most consistent and effective player for Mountain View. He did a good job of managing the floor and showed good ball handling. He keeps his eyes up and has good court vision. In an earlier game he hit a game winning three-pointer at the buzzer. He has some good height for a junior guard, at over 6-foot.

David Beecher - JR - He has good size at 6-foot-7 and a strong build. He looked to be a strictly post player.

Trevin Crider - SR - At times he was making strong plays inside and away from the basket. There was a stretch of the game where his shot was not dropping and I think that caused him to hesitate a couple times. Overall though he played with a lot of intensity and contributed in a number of ways.

Desert Vista loses its first game by 1

I caught the second half
of Desert Vista's first loss of the season. They fell to Loyola Academy out of
Illinois. The Thunder were trailing by multiple buckets for most of the half
but kept fighting against a disciplined team. Loyola had nearly all its points
coming from two players, and at one point late in the half Gregg pointed out
that all but three shot attempts came from those two players. Eventually DV did
a better job of locking up on those players which helped them stay in the game.

They had multiple
opportunities to tie or take the lead in the closing minutes, but some costly
missed shots and turnovers kept them trailing. Loyola also did a good job of
not letting them get second chance attempts.

They had the ball for a
full court inbounds play with 0.7 seconds left but the pass was too high and
hit the ceiling. DV lost 51-52.

Senior
Brandon Clarke once again showed that he is a very efficient scorer around the
basket.

Junior
guard Tarik Cool was more impactful than the last time I saw DV play. He is a
pretty lengthy 6-foot-1 and showed good ball control. He needs to be careful
going up for floaters, as he was caught with a couple back to back charges when
he could have just pulled up and knocked down a midrange jumper.

Sophomore
Caleb Simmons showed me some range to his shot with a three ball from a couple
feet behind the arc. He has upside and with all the playing time he is getting
he should only get better over the years.

PUHSD Holiday Classic championship game and All-Tournament team

Cesar Chavez (10-2) vs Chaparral High, CO. (6-1)
Chavez prevailed 72-61

Chavez advanced to the title game by nipping an undefeated Central at the buzzer... inbounding the ball at the far baseline with three seconds showing on the clock and down one point, senior Thomas Smith hit junior Kenny Sutton in stride at the far arc... his shot swished at the buzzer

The title game would feature a much taller Colorado squad challenging Chavez's quickness and depth... the Wolverines maintained a 14-13 lead after one quarter, as their 2/3 zone forced the Champions to shoot from the perimeter... the teams exchanged baskets to begin the 2nd quarter, but more trouble came when Chavez's sharpshooting 6-foot senior guard Tarion May picked up his 3rd foul at at the 6:21 mark... Chavez upped the pace, while Chaparral's 6-foot-6 senior Chris Moody was having his way in the paint... Chavez was ahead 26-25 at the 1:46 mark when the Champions 5-foot-8 junior starting guard Kenny Sutton went to the bench with his 3rd foul... Chavez was ahead 31-29 at halftime... the 3rd quarter was a seesaw, and great action, including a couple of rim shattering dunks... the Wolverines feature 6-foot-6 tri-captains that rose to the challenge of Chavez's superior athleticism... Chavez was ahead 48-45 entering the decisive 4th quarter... the Champions immediately extended the lead to eight points against a fatigued Colorado squad... the local team eventually pushed the lead to 13 points, thanks partly to 15/18 free throw shooting... the final score was 72-61... "This was the first game in which the kids gave great energy for all 32 minutes", added winning Coach Gary Lee, "We have very good pieces, and we really attacked the basket in the 2nd half. Their big kids were a challenge; they all shoot the ball well. We definitely wore them down. Our kids came to play after the big win over Central yesterday. We really rose to the challenge."

Leading scorers were:
Cesar Chavez - Isaiah Wilson (17 pts), Tarion May (15 pts), Rashaad Goolsby (17 pts), and Kenny Sutton (12 pts)
Chaparral, CO. - Charles Moody (18 pts), Jake Holtzmann (14 pts), and Chase Coon (10 pts)
