POY and COY now

The season is complete. so who are your COY and POY selections now?

I know super soph Barcello is getting a ton of love, and rightfully so, but Kuiper did all things to help his team win - even if it didn't show up on the stat sheet.

Speaking of super soph - Howard was the leading soph scorer in the nation.

COY is a tough one also.

Philanthropy and High School Sports

I've been thinking about rich schools versus poor schools since Gilbert Christian won the state basketball championship last week. In my opinion, I had felt GC essentially bought the trophy because the school is affiliated with some folks who have a lot of money. These rich folks were able to craft a top-notch club team that is basically part of the school since the club team (AZ Power) uses the school facilities.

Even though many of the kids who participate in the Power program attend other schools, the Power provides enough athletes to GC to make them a powerhouse. The Power program originated a couple years ago when the fathers of some players funded the club so their sons could play summer ball together. The dads did the structuring using high-level business acumen and made all the right decisions by hiring very competent trainers to work with the kids. These trainers teach kids to play the game the "right way."

I am not a rich man, but I'm not poor either. My middle-class status enables me to see things somewhere in the middle. I respect the rights of the rich to enjoy the fruits of their labors but I'm also very sympathetic to the needs of the poor. In a perfect world, everyone would have the same opportunities for success, comfort and the enjoyment of life. But we do not live in a utopian world.

As I try to balance the needs and rights of the rich and poor, I really, really struggle and to find some clarity I often rely on the laws of nature. One of the examples I often analogize is that of the plight of a bird...specifically the mother and baby birds. If momma bird doesn't go out every day working her ass off to find worms and insects, baby birds die of starvation. Or if a hawk catches momma bird while she's out on a food excursion, there's no momma anymore to feed the young, and they die. Who ever said the world is fair?

So using this anology over the years has brought me to conclude the United States is dying a slow and painful death by starvation due to decades of entitlement mentality. The fairytale of Robin Hood stealing from the rich to benefit the poor is a sick fantasy. The redistribution of wealth is a communist theory that has never worked in the history of mankind.

Our American society has become so ill and misguided that a very high percentage of the population has discovered that it's more profitable and a whole lot less work to feed off welfare benefits and other social programs. This way of life has fostered entitlement behaviors that are choking society to death. How can the government fund our schools and maintain our roadways when it's feeding half the country?

Our entitlement mentality has become so pervasive it's creating a divide between the rich and poor like no time in our country's history. One only needs to contrast a school like Chaparral that's filthy rich and a school like Carl Hayden that's dirt poor. Carl Hayden couldn't even field a football team a few years ago while Chaparral players train in NFL quality facilities.

So, how do we make sense of this conundrum?

Storming The Record Books: Arizona Christian Makes History

The Arizona Christian University Firestorm Men's Basketball team defeated the 2014 defending NAIAD1 National Champions Vanguard University at home last evening 79-71. Huge thanks to all the high school coaches and players who came out last night to support us. With the win, #19 ranked ACU Firestorm broke a school record in total wins (24-7; 13-4) and advances to the Golden State Athletic Conference Semifinals on Saturday at #2 Hope International (25-2; 15-2). Head Coach Jeff Rutter is hoping to lead his team to a 3rd consecutive NAIA Divison 1 National Tournament in Kansas City beginning March 18th.

BREAKING NEWS: AV and ABCA team up for All-Star Games

After a very productive meeting between ArizonaVarsity.com and the ABCA, and with ABCA board approval, we are pleased to announce that the post season ABCA All-Star games will now be the:

ArizonaVarsity.com All-Star Games sponsored by the ABCA
[/B]
And unlike AZ High School All-Star games in the past, this event will be held in March following the regular season. So it doesn't conflict with any AIA bylaws, coaches that are members of the ABCA will have a vote on player selections, but WILL NOT BE NOMINATING the players for this event. Ballots and players considered for each All-Star team will be determined by ArizonaVarsity.com and conducted electronically.

This will be for seniors only this year, and held on March 21, 2015.[/I]

The following is Tentative:

Boys and Girls
15 All-Stars Selected per division with 5 alternates

All-Star Games
Division 1 All-Star players vs. Division 2 All-Star players
Division 3 All-Star players vs. Division 4 All-Star players

12-Minute Quarters

POY and COY honored for each division at half-time.

We are also working with Ron Coleman, and eventually plan to hold this event with underclassmen All-Star games (not sponsored by the ABCA).

Special pregame player features, game coverage and tons more here on ArizonaVarsity.com.

A lot of work still to be accomplished, but put this date on your calendar because it is going to be off-the-hook.

Coaches - get signed up with your Coaches Association NOW. It's only $35 - have your boosters get it done!

Special early thanks to everyone at the ABCA. Venue and more info to come...

The most recent Arizona H.S. player to win 4 state championships in a row

Congrats to Cassius Peat of Corona H.S.for becoming the most recent Arizona high school boys basketball player to win 4 straight championships. The last player to accomplish that feat was past Arizona Heat player Mario Stanley from 1a Fort Thomas back in the 90's. If I'm wrong can anyone correct me and let me know if anyone else accomplished that feat ??? Thanks coach 'G'

new section placements

all these coaches on here and none of you talkin bout the new sections?? that would be hot topic to me.

couple thoughts:

D1 - 27 total teams... wow.
- only a couple westside teams in Milly and Liberty.
- how come horizon is split from Chapp and st marys is split from brophy? Id switch those two. other than that I think they split the sections well.

D2 - 62 teams
- do the sections with more teams play less freedom games?

D3 - 56 teams.... this div will be very tough to win too. Lots of D1 and metro teams moving into rural schools mix.
