AIA approves new transfer rule

AIA Legislative Council approves transfer policy change
March 4, 2016 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

The climate for a transfer rule change early Friday morning was not positive as the AIA's Legislative Council convened.

It changed drasticallly once a transfer rule amendement to an amendment was proposed and worked itself into an newly adopted rule come July 1.

By a vote of 32-7 the LC passed a transfer rule that would require students who transfer regardless of change of domiclie or not to sit out 50 percent of regular season games. Any subsequent transfer by that student would require sitting out a calendar year -- again regardless of change of domicle. Transfers, if both the sending and receiving schools agree, can be appealed.

The amendment offered by Mesa district athletic director Dr. Steve Hogen pushed the original transfer change from applying not just to varsity level, but the sub levels. It gained more appeal after about a 10-minute caucas among LC members.

The policy adopted underwent two amendements before coming to a vote. The hope is it serves to relieve a heavy workload on administrators and slow and knowingly won't eliminate athletically-motivated transfers.

"The time AD's have had to spend to validate and investigate has been substantial," La Joya athletic director Derek Fahleson, a former and recent AIA executive board member, said. "The onus will now be on the parent to appeal. Domicile is no longer an issue. The parent has to prove what the appeal or hardship reason is."

Main Event

Main Event is this upcoming weekend and is always the top local event of the year for AAU basketball.
190 teams will be participating this year-which is insane.

All the top teams in state are in including the Bagley crew-Phoenix Pfamily 17U.
Not sure if all of them are coming. Which I believe has
'18 6'10" F MB3-Sierra Canyon
'20 6'4" SG Marcus Bagley-Sierra Canyon
'17 6'8" PF Cody Riley-Sierra Canyon
'17 6'0" PG Remy Martin-Sierra Canyon
'17 6'6" W Randy Bronner-Elite One Prep
'17 6'3" SG Darion Spottsville-Shadow Mtn
'17 5'11" PG Holland Woods-Apollo

I'm sure some others--this is what I was told
Sierra Canyon has other nice juniors as well

HS Pick Em Contest Final results

We have been doing this the past few years or so. Very fun! One of my favorite things to do--yes I'm sick. Anyway its open to all people. You have to pick 15 games out of the 16 games--for coaches who can't pick there own HS team!

Picks are due Tuesday at 3:00 PM for every week. There will be no Monday games so people can have time to pick for the next week,

Let me know if you are in by making your picks!
I made my picks--if you want to cheat off me thats fine;)

Here is the first week. Its almost all tourneys plus 1 regular season game.

Spread guy

I don't know if the guy who wants to ban the spread offense has been watching, but Mesa is in the state championship game after using the spread throughout the tournament. Most notably, they opened the game versus Basha in it. It takes guts to do that, but is smart because you begin right away to play on the other team's mind about it, plus you send a message that you will be in charge of the tempo, plus you see how the other guys intend to play it. I was rooting for Coach Grothaus because we are close friends and worked so closely together for several years, but I understand and respect what Coach Burcar was doing, as I'm sure Coach Grothaus did. Mesa continued to go in and out of the spread the entire game, keeping a grip on the tempo the entire time. When you do that effectively, you sometimes cause the other team to feel more pressure to catch up quicker which may cause them to make unnecessary turnovers or take rushed shots. Each possession is magnified in importance. It is a strategy that definitely has a place in the game of basketball. Fans and parents who don't like it are usually on the losing end of it. I'm sure Mesa's fans and parents are quite happy today.

I was originally going to the St. Mary's game but since they will be facing M Ridge (57 minutes away from my house)--I will be going somewhere else.
I haven't been at a game in 2 weeks. I've been really sick--so I'm trying to stay local!
All 4 games in the poll are solid.
I haven't seen Hamilton this year and Coach Ernst is a stud like always.
BC and Basha are obviously talented teams.
DR is always fun to watch with Timmy and Mesa works well together.
Pinnacle has some good young players and KVH is a treat at Perry

Playoff Tidbits

Anybody notice that Foothills beat Saguaro (and Queen Creek) without Nehls?

Diaz from Nogales is probably the best unknown player in the state: 18.7 points and 11.9 rebounds (333) in 28 games. He also has 82 steals and 80 blocks. He is super-active defensively from what I'm being told down south.

Gregg: All State team question

Gregg,

Love the All State team article posted. Reading down the list it still blows my mind that there are so many more teams in DII then D1.

That being said, I'm curious in your mind, if the two rosters showed up at a court this afternoon which team would win?

Does the D1 team have someone who could stop Lightfoot inside?

Allen & Harry vs. Thomas and Rhymes on the wing?

Barcello & Lee vs. Bibby & Woods?

Marvin Bagley III enrolls at Sierra Canyon School

Yesterday, ESPN ran an article confirming that Marvin Bagley III will be enrolling at Sierra Canyon School. While I also am disappointed to see Marvin leave our state, I was curious how good a team he will be playing for in the future when he receives his eligibility again.

Sierra Canyon already was stacked five outstanding D1 recruits prior to Marvin joining their team. The addition of Marvin will make their front line as powerful as any team in the country. Below are the current top five players on their team:

Cody Riley, Junior, 6’8” PF – 5 star, 22nd national ranking

Ira Lee, Junior, 6’8” PF – Junior 4 star, 34th national ranking

Cody Riley, Junior, 6’0” PG – 4 star, 101st national ranking

Devearl Ramsey, Senior, 5’11” PG – 3 star, Nevada commit

Adam Seiko, Junior, 6’3” SG – 2 star, 6 D1 offers
