Notes and observations from Hamilton at Tucson High on 12/16

- Hamilton ran away from Tucson High in the second quarter and didn't relinquish the lead as they won 51-30. It was an ugly game, tied 10-10 after the first quarter. Hamilton led by 10 at halftime. The Badgers scored just two points in the third quarter. It seemed as the coach Daron Cross and his players are not on the same page and need to work on communication. The Badgers played zone defense for most of the game, even at times when trailing 13 points in the fourth quarter. Cross told me after the game he told his players to press and man up in the second half, some of his players told me otherwise.

-Hamilton's Rashed Smith was the lone bright spot in this one, as he finished with a game-high 21 points, including a highlight dunk in the closing minutes.

- Tucson's coach Cross should start to identify roles and rotations for his players. 11 players received minutes, but it seemed like they all just floated around the perimeter with nothing to do. It was an ugly performance. I hope Tucson figures it out soon, they have the athletes to run, but need play defense and figure out rotations.

Notes and observations from Cienega at Sabino on 12/15

- Despite a few scoring runs, Cienega held Sabino at bay for the Bobcats second consecutive win to move them to 8-3 on the year. Coach Matt Johnson really has Cienega playing well with each player understanding their role and rarely forcing anything. They have good spacing, not great, and have the athletes to match up with most teams in transition.

- Cienega senior shooting guard Andrew Leonard shined, as he may be the best in Southern Arizona at moving without the ball and coming off screens for opener jumpers. Leonard finished with a game-high 23 points, three rebounds and knocking down 7-of-8 free-throws.

- Cienega junior guard Jordan Green ended with eight points, four steals and three assists, coming off setting the school record with eight steals in the previous game. Green is a streaky shooter, but takes pride in locking down his defender and hustles to do the dirty work.

- Sabino senior wing Travis Walker finished with a team-high 22 points, with 16 coming in the second half. Walker gives all-out effort on every play, as he's the lone senior for the Sabercats. He was the reason 3A Sabino matched up well with 5A Cienega. Cochise Community College sent assistant coach Derek Lane to watch some players. Afterward, Lane told Walker they'll be recruiting him all season long.

- Sabino competed without the likes of junior 6-7 forward Mike Evans and junior defensive minded guard Daniel Joseph. Once the two are inserted back into the rotation, Sabino could make some noise in 3A down the final stretch of the season. They're loaded with underclassmen, as six played significant minutes.

Notes and observations from Nogales at Sunnyside on 12/13

- Sunnyside (8-5) stormed back in the fourth quarter to outlast Nogales 50-47 for the Blue Devils fifth consecutive win. The Apaches (2-8) dropped its eighth straight game. Nogales had the ball on the last possession of the game, trailing by three points. The Apaches' Edgar Condes wide-open shot from downtown circled around the rim and rolled out as the buzzer sounded. It truly was a heart breaker for Nogales, as they lead for most of the fourth quarter, and really needed this to break its slump.

- Before the game, Nogales coach Ricardo De La Riva said because his team is filled with underclassmen, he's pretty much coaching for next season. I found that somewhat odd, just nine games into the season and he decided they can't win this year. And he kind of coached like it too. Two minutes into the first quarter, De La Riva was sitting on the bench, silent, as his team trailed 11-0 and were 0-for-7 from three-point range. He didn't call for any plays or sets in the first quarter, which ended with Sunnyside up 15-6. The Apaches came back in the second quarter and took its first lead in the third frame. As the managed to come back, they started using some simple concepts like setting a screen to free up a shooter in the corner and the big man planting himself at the free throw line. It worked, but Nogales only ran it a handful of times, and couldn't execute some of them. I'm not sure he's coached them to utilize counters or what to do when a play breaks down. De La Riva is a good coach, but it seems he's not 100 percent into this season.

- Sunnyside senior forward Nikc Jackson finished with 18 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks. Jackson, who stands at 6-8, did whatever he wanted on the court, as Nogales' tallest player stands six feet tall. Jackson came up with a huge block in the final 15 seconds of the game to help preserve the Blue Devils lead. Jackson notched his ninth double-double so far this season. Grand Canyon University, who play tonight in Tucson vs U of A, sent assistant coach TJ Benson to watch Jackson. Vanderbilt also sent someone to watch him play.

- Sunnyside senior Mikey Silva surpassed 1,000 career points on a night he scored a game-high 19 points. Silva is a quick, small guard with a tight handle and a solid mid-range jumper that allows him to pull-up whenever he sees fit. Silva uses his body and basketball IQ to get the foul and go to the free-throw line. It's one of the main reasons South Mountain Community College offered him a scholarship because getting to the line is a premium at the next level. Silva turns 18 years old today.

- Once Sunnyside adds senior big men Dwayne Eason and Santino Duarte, both are ineligible at the moment, the rotations will look different. Eason, Duarte and Jackson will be a hie trio of bigs, who all do different things. Jackson can score inside with his solid footwork, but excels on the wing or with his back to the basket. Duarte is a load inside, who will protect the rim and score inside of 12 feet. Eason, a transfer from Tucson High, can stretch the floor as he's a knock-down catch-and-shoot player from the three-point line. The Blue Devils are also missing junior forward Javier Ramirez, who coach Jimmy Rosthenhausler said is the team's best shooter.

- The Blue Devils went into halftime with 24 points, all of them scored by Jackson and Silva. Sunnyside will need to get contributions from other players if they want to make some noise in 6A.

- Nogales shot 8-for-30 as a team from three-point range and attempted just one free-throw in the loss. The lone bright spot for the Apaches was junior guard Sammy Legleu, who finished with a team-high 18 points. He was the only player to score in double-digits for Nogales.

Ep. 15: Gregg Rosenberg, Sam Beskind & Jared Irwin and Doug D’Amore

In Episode 15 of The Chuck Constantino Show, presented by ArizonaVarsity.com, Chuck has Arizona Varsity lead basketball analyst Gregg Rosenberg recap a week of high school hoops. Gregg talks about some of the teams he watched this week, Pinnacle stud freshman Nico Mannion, games from Hoophall West & Rancho Solano Prep and three takeaways from this week in high school basketball (0:43). Next, Chuck is joined by Catalina Foothills senior wing Jared Irwin and junior guard Sam Beskind. The dynamic duo discussed the rocky 6-3 start, gameday routines, last year's buzzer-beating loss in the 4A state quarterfinals. They break down each other's game, talk about key underclassmen on the team and end with some rapid fire questions (32:06). Last, Catalina Foothills coach Doug D'Amore sits down with Chuck and talk about what he's seen from his team so far this season, where they need to improve, this week's three-game span that includes Rincon/University, Mountain View and Tucson High, his squad's identity, what its been like coaching Jared and Sam, then end the podcast with some rapid fire questions (51:10).

Notes and observations from Salpointe Catholic at Cienega on 12/9

- Salpointe Catholic (8-2) outlasted Cienega 68-65 in overtime to snap the Bobcats six-game winning streak and in the process, extended their own win streak to five games. As time expired in the fourth quarter, senior guard Isaac Cruz appeared out of a scrum in the lane with the ball and headed toward the three-point line. Cruz, stopped his dribble and turned, as his back was facing the basket, and heaved up a prayer. The shot feel as time expired, sending the two squads into OT. On the last possession in OT, Salpointe senior guard Cameron Miller split the defense and tossed the ball from the free-throw line to junior Rylan O-Brien, who was waiting in the corner. O'Brien pump faked, sending the defending past him and out of the play, then stepped to his right and lifted a three-pointer, again as the time expired, sending the Lancers home with a victory. I haven't seen every team in Southern Arizona play yet, but these two are the best teams in Tucson.

- Sophomore Majok Deng finished with a team-high 22, and really picked up his game in the second half. Though he forced a few shots, he still looked like the best player on the court most of the time. One thing I noticed, the Cienega coaching staff utilized its bigs to force Deng to run them off the three-point line, getting him to move side to side, and often on his heels as opponents blew by him to the rim. Cienega's bigs, senior Darius Williams and junior Breven Burnett combined for 42 points, including six threes, and 17 rebounds. Williams, in particular, shined as he scored 20 of his 27 points in the second half and overtime.

- Salpointe senior guard Cameron Miller is a stud on the defensive end and excels at getting into an opponent and digging in while defending on the perimeter. Miller held senior guard Andrew Leonard, Cienega's leading scorer, to five points on 2-of-11. Leonard hit his first trey in overtime. Miller finished with 16 points.

- Salpointe junior sharpshooter O'Brien ended with 19 points, including 5-of-9, from downtown. O'Brien and Sabino's Blake Rustand may be the best catch-and-shot players from three-point range in Southern Arizona. O'Brien has a few more moves in his repertoire in order to get his shot off.

- Cienega junior point guard Jordan Green ended the game with 13 points, six assists, five steals, four rebounds and five turnovers. Green is a player who will continually fill up the stat sheet, as he's learned to affect the outcome of a game without scoring. He'll need to cut down on his turnovers, but Green is a player who takes great pride in shutting down his opposition on the defensive end.

Coach Grace - In The News at UCLA

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-ba...st-recruiters-top-25-college-basketball-teams

I watched the Bruins play against an Aussie pro team two weeks ago and they have the best talent since Grace's first year there when they had 3 first round NBA draft picks and made two sweet sixteens. They are at #17 pre-season.

The key will be how fast frosh Lonzo Ball can pick up the PG position at that level and how he plays with Alford Junior at the two/one. They should be an exciting offense but will need to step up on D to have a deep run in the tourney.

Freshman T.J. Leaf and Ike Anigbogu should get major minutes and these Bruins are deeper than either sweet sixteen team IMO. When Aaron Holiday comes off the bench a la Zach Lavine when he was there you know the depth is good.

Notes and observations from Tucson High at Salpointe Catholic on 12/8

- Salpointe Catholic flexed its muscle on Tucson High in a 68-52 win at home. The Lancers trailed the Badgers 14-13 after the first quarter, but Salpointe went on to outscore Tucson 55-38 in the remaining three quarters of play.

- Sophomore Majok Deng, ESPN's No. 4 hoops prospect on the West Coast, seems like a coach's dream. The 6-5 wing finished with a game-high 21 point performance with University of Arizona head coach Sean Miller sitting court side (presumably to watch his sons Cameron and Brayden play). Before the game, Salpointe coach Brian Holstrom said Deng is coming along nicely. Deng has a nice feel for the game, he doesn't force shots, hustles and does whatever his team needs. In the closing seconds of the first half, senior Jackson Breshears drove toward the hoop seeming to go for a layup. Deng yelled out "Jackson," as he trailed and Breshears tossed up a high-arching alley-oop to Deng, who caught the ball on the way up and slammed it home. The crowd erupted, as it truly was one of those "Holy S***" moments. I wouldn't be shocked if Deng reels in an offer from U of A soon.

- Salpointe senior guard Cameron Miller is such a savvy and smart player on the court. Miller knows how to drive in the lane and work angles to get the foul called, and he does it with ease. He picked his spots and converted all six of the free-throws. Miller ended the game with 18 points, stepping up as the Lancers closer in the fourth quarter with 10 points. In my opinion, Miller is underused playing off the ball and standing in a corner.

- Holstrom also told me his Lancers tend to let opponents back into the game and haven't learned how to put a squad away when they should.

- Tucson High lacks the size and strength to beat most 6A teams, but they'll compete and have the athletes to run. Badgers coach Daron Cross uses the five-in, five-out substitution system. It helped with the energy, but threw off any offensive rhythm. The Badgers use some core concepts like a motion offense, but really spread the ball around and don't have a guy who can consistently go out there and get buckets. Though they lack the strength, I'd like to see the Badgers add more sets for their bigs, who are long, athletic and quick.

- I'm not sure this note belongs here, but the level of refereeing in Southern Arizona is still horrendous. Both refs missed an obvious goal tend on Deng early in the first quarter. So obvious, the Lancer coaching staff was collectively joking about it during the game. Also, they officiated the game as if it were the NBA with a continuation rule. Just so people are aware, there is no continuation in high school basketball, the play is supposed to stopped at the whistle.

Notes and observations from Cienega at Catalina Foothills on 12/6

- Cienega (6-2) never relinqueshed its lead in a 72-57 win, the Bobcats sixth consecutive, on the road against Catalina Foothills. Foothills (4-3) has now dropped two straight losses.

- Cienega, a team loaded with seniors, has settled down since the two losses to open the season in the Salpointe Tip Off Classic. Coach Matt Johnson said before the game his team is starting to share the ball, specifically passing to shooters, instead of some of the hero ball they played earlier in the season. The Bobcats were able to pick apart the Falcons defense, moving the ball from side-to-side to find a wide open shot. When Foothills wanted to run to open the second half, Cienega was with them stride for stride. If Cienega continues to share the ball offensively and guys learn their roles, the Bobcats will be one of Southern Arizona's top-3 teams all season.

- Cienega junior forward Breven Burnett scored a team-high 17 points, shooting 7-of-8 from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown. Burnett also grabbed six rebounds and dished two assists. He's a player who could really propel the Bobcats this season if he's a steady option. Burnett currently averages 8.7 points per game, so it could just an outlier game, but he stepped up in a big game.

- Cienega senior guard Andrew Leonard is a sharpshooter. He shoots with confidence, near perfect form and has a quick release. Leonard knocked down four three's to end with 15 points. He also converted on a rare four-point play. The one thing I didn't like from Leonard is him fouling out with four minutes left in the game. It didn't matter in this contest because Cienega led the whole way, but he's the team's best shooter and is a career 86 percent free-throw shooter, something that would come handy at the end of games.

- Cienega senior Darius Williams is a player who can do a little bit of everything, except for the handle the ball. Williams ended the night with 15 points by hitting a few three-pointers, knocking down his free-throws and layups. He's a good passer inside, as he finished with six assists.

- Cienega junior point guard Jordan Green is long, defensive hound. He locked up Foothills stud Sam Beskind in the first half and finished with three steals. He's smart with his shot selection, had seven assists and is tough enough to be the team's second-leading rebounder, averaging 4.7 per contest. He does play with a lot of emotion, and at time's can be a little too demonstrative with his body language for a point guard. He'll be a player to watch these next two years in Southern Arizona.

- As for Foothills, I noticed they can score in the half-court, but are much better when they're running. The Falcons did a bit to open the third quarter, but had to slow it back down because Cienega was able to do it better.

- Junior guard Sam Beskind can score in many ways. His pull-up game is solid and Beskind is strong enough to finish at the rim, whether he's laying it up or dunking the ball. Beskind had a slow first half, as he's recovering from pneumonia, shooting 2-for-6. In the second half he exploded, with step-back three-pointers and mid-range buckets. His effort and hustle standout. He raced to mid court to steal the ball on a lazy lob pass and sprinted for a wide-open two-handed slam. He finished with a game-high 20 points.

- Sophomore forward Phoenix Katz oozes potential for a big man. He needs to add some weight and lift some. His strong post presence led to 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting and several and-ones. He plays with a lot of confidence and endless motor when he's motivated. He was issued eight technical fouls last year as a freshman on varsity, so maturity is a problem. Katz currently has two post moves, but could learn a few more as teams will learn them and he'll need a counter or two. He also ducks his head in the post, something that won't work against better teams or at the next level.

- Catalina Foothills head coach Doug D'Amore said pre game he's currently without two of his players, senior football players Jimmy Stewart and Max Machalczik. Machalczik, who will play football in college, played in one game in the summer for the Falcons and scored 35 points. They both should be back next week.
