- Sahuaro escaped host Cholla 49-43 in the first round of the 5A state tournament to advance to the Elite Eight where they'll host No. 15 Liberty on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The loss ended Cholla's 13-game win streak and its season.
- The first half of the game belonged to Cholla's senior center Kaylon Tippons and junior guard Marcel Dean as they combined for 22 of the Chargers 25 points at the break. Tippons, a long shot blocker, chipped in eight points coming on putbacks, layups and a dunk, and affected Sahuaro's shot making inside the paint. At one point, Dean rattled off four straight three-pointers, each looking more impressive than the other. His third make came on a catch-and-shoot three from the right wing, three feet behind the line. Dean's fourth three-pointer came in transition, two feet behind the line, on the move. Dean ended the first half with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
- The Cougars (20-7) trailed No. 7 Cholla 36-31 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the roles reversed, as it was No. 10 Sahuaro's guard play that stepped up. Junior guard Dylan Newell hit two big three-pointers and senior guard Devan Gary added a trey as well. Cholla freshman guard Myles Gantt, the team's best perimeter defender, fouled out of the game with 3:47 left. From then on, both squads were in the double-bonus. Sahuaro took a 41-39 lead with 2:56 left and never relinquished it from there. The Chargers called a timeout down 46-43 with 1:01 remaining. After an empty possession, Cholla called another timeout with 55 seconds left. At that moment, six players had four fouls on them. With the score still 46-43, the Chargers called another timeout with 22 seconds left, as Sahuaro would be inbounding. Cholla waited 14 seconds to foul someone, wasting valuable time. Instead of trying to foul senior Brendan Gary, a 60 percent shooter from the charity stripe, they opted to foul Newell. Newell sank them both to put the game out of reach.
- Dean finished with 18 points, but did not make a shot in the second half as the Cougars switched up its defense, making someone put a body on him at all times to frustrate him and force shots. With no one else on the team showing the ability to hit a shot consistently in the game, Sahuaro came out in the second half knowing he was the only shot maker. The Chargers shot 5-of-19 from downtown and 8-of-22 from the field. Dean has really elevated his game and is a POY candidate in Southern Arizona. If there was a most improved POY award, he would win.
- Tippons finished with 11 points and several blocked shots. Tippons is a better off-the ball and help defender than an overall defensive player. Tippons shot 5-of-10 from the field, but only sank 1-off-6 free-throws.
- While Brendan Gary deserves the attention he's received in his senior year, Dylan Newell is the team's best scorer, despite taking less than 10 shots most games. Newell finished with 16 points, knocking down four three's and converting all four of his foul shots. Sahuaro doesn't take many threes in a game unless you dare them, and Cholla did. It burned them, as Sahuaro made seven treys, compared to eight two-pointers as a teams.
