Team AZV Fitness Thread

I figured that if 2020 hasn't been a wake up call for an appreciation for personal health, then it's served no purpose at all. So for anyone who wants the extra encouragement and accountability, whether you're intent on getting in shape, or staying in shape, I think it'd be cool to have a thread where you can outline and track fitness goals.

I'm not in great shape, but I have dropped 40 pounds this year, mostly by putting an emphasis on sleeping at least 6.5 hours a night. Heading into 2020, my average over the previous few years was closer to 4:45. My goal is to take the momentum and extra energy and focus on building some better habits. Each week on Sunday I'll check in here and update my progress. If you feel like setting some public goals, I'd love for you to play along.

In order to conquer an enemy, you have to identify it. My three biggest hurdles to getting in shape are 1) a lack of sleep, 2) late night fourth-mealing, and 3) an affinity for comfort (I don't much care for being sore,).

My overall goal is to drop 60+ more pounds, and develop consistent sleep/exercise routines. I'm trying to get there by upping my sleep to an average of 6:45, putting an average at least 12 hours between dinner and breakfast, and taking in <2000 calories and a gallon of water a day.

As far as exercise goes, I'm nursing a bum left foot and left elbow, but if you want things to be different, you've gotta be different, so I'm shooting for an average of 20k steps a day, and 100 push ups.

Gameday Decision?

We have all covered MANY high school football games here in Arizona? My question is what factors go into where you will be on a given Friday night during the season, assuming its your decision? Is it distance from where you live, certain players or teams that you want to see? Combination, etc....

I usually look for appealing games in Chandler/Gilbert first and if nothing jumps out I'll head to either Ahwatukee or Queen Creek. I'll also look for games where I probably wouldn't see the visiting team often. For instance in week 1 I would have gone to Desert Edge @ Campo Verde

Chemistry or talent

If you were a head coach of team sport and it is your first season at a program that has been in the doldrums for a few years, what would be more important to have on your roster as you try and build that program:
Chemistry or talent?

I feel like in that first season, I'd rather have chemistry. That first year sets the foundation and tone for the program moving forward. If the team has been bad for a few years, it is vital to get some good vibes surrounding the program. While it is true talent can lead to wins which creates good vibes, but if the talent doesn't lead to winning and the chemistry is bad it can blow up real quick.
Now, if the team is paying poorly that first season but the chemistry not only remains intact but strong then it can start bringing out talent and maybe even draw some talent into the program.

What do you think?

Would you rather.....

Be Michael Jordan and/or Joe Montana where you go 6-0 and 4-0, respectively, in the Finals and Super Bowl
Or
Be LeBron James, who made eight finals but is 3-5 or Tom Brady who is 6-3 in the Super Bowl.

So unblemished or more appearances but with a few defeats on your record in the big series/game.

I'm Jordan's 6-0 over James' 3-5 but I'd take Brady's 6-3 over Montana's 4-0.
Guess I didn't really pick one side or the other.
How about you?

Reports: Big Ten and Pac-12 cancelling fall football

Decided to jump in here and ask for some reactions from all of you surrounding the reports this morning that both the Big Ten and Pac-12 are cancelling the fall football season. Those same reports from Dan Patrick say the ACC and Big 12 are on the fence while the SEC is trying to "buy time" and have other schools join them this season.

Overall, what is your immediate reaction to the news and do you believe this will affect the high school football season here in Arizona?

Take THEM out to the ballgame

If you are watching the MLB, you have seen the cardboard cutouts. Some teams have taken to putting former greats in the crowd.
It got me thinking, if you could invite four people involved in baseball in anyway who would you want to attend a game with, talk shop, share a bag of peanuts and sing the seventh inning stretch with if we ever get back to going to games again.
Me - Ted Williams (my favorite player I've never seen play); Vin Scully (shared an elevator with him - just me, him and the elevator attendant - at Chase Field and only managed to say a few words), Tony Gwynn (he and Williams would have an amazing conversation) and Mark Fidrych (for the entertainment value).
How about you?

Fake Crowd Noise, Yay or Nay?

Was driving around last night and tuned into the D-backs game. Schulte made it clear they were broadcasting from empty Chase Field while watching the game from LA on monitors. Also brought up the fact that there are no fans in LA. Despite all of that, there was fake crowd noise on the broadcast.

I personally am bothered by it. Why act like everything is normal when it obviously isn't? Plus, a low murmur of noise is annoying as it does change with the moment.

Where do you stand?

Rituals

Between us all we have covered thousands of sporting events. Does anyone have any pregame, in game, or post game rituals?

I've got some quirks. I always take the same route and try to park in the same space at a venue. The parking doesn't always work but I give it my best effort. For HS Football I always start on the side of the home team. When doing play by play of a given sport I always like to have 5 minutes with each coach before the game and also 15 minutes of silence where I talk to no one and run a few things through my head by myself. Lastly when I'm covering the Diamondbacks I always leave the house exactly 2 hours and 40 minutes before the scheduled first pitch.

Ralph's TeamAZV Daily Blog

What's up everybody? Figured I'd start chronicling some daily sports/life thoughts on the forum, and now that we've officially got some live sports to look forward to every day, I shouldn't ever run out of content.

Saturday, July 25th

I watched the Phoenix Mercury game today while editing some articles and podcasts for the ArizonaVarsity.

The Mercury got absolutely stomped by the LA Sparks, but it was cool to see 5 of what I consider to be the top 20 women's basketball players of all time all share the court simultaneously. It probably would have been helpful if Brittney Griner didn't collect 2 fouls in the first couple of minutes, because she had to ride the bench while Nneka Ogwumike dominated.

It was surreal to see them play in an empty gym, and all have Breonna Taylor's name across the back of their jerseys. I know social justice and societal improvement isn't a contest between the leagues, but it has always felt very much like taking up social issues is much more natural for the WNBA as a league.

Last night's Arizona Diamondbacks opener is still rattling (pun intended) around in my mind. I know that Madison Bumgarner isn't talking to the media for some reason, but it would have been really interesting to hear directly from him how he felt about being left in the game with the bases loaded at the end of the 6th inning. He didn't seem fatigued to me- he seemed to be doing the same thing he did all game long- throw absolute junk just outside the strike zone at all four corners. I think the Padres hitters finally realized that if they were patient, he'd get behind in some counts and have to come back toward the strike zone.

Speaking of the Padres- it was embarrassing how much better they looked in their home whites compared to the Dbacks in their road grays. @EspoAZ did a great job of pointing out how bland the Dbacks opening Uni was.

If there was anything positive about the Dbacks opener, it was Kole Calhoun swinging for power. He made great contact twice before launching his first HR of the year in his third at bat.

Yesterday I listened to a podcast from Suns super fan Andrew Leezus, who recorded a conversation with Devin Booker and Mikal Bridges after being called out by the Suns official Twitter account for having promised to tattoo "DOMINAYTON" on his face if Deandre Ayton hit a three in Orlando. It's definitely got some NSFW language, but the 27 minute show is pretty funny. Even funnier is that Deandre Ayton blocked Leezus on Twitter after the tattoo story became national news.

Looking forward to catching tonight's Dbacks game. I had to re-up with Youtube TV so that I have the Fox Sports Regional channels for Suns and Dbacks games, and the fact that they went from $40 to $65 a month is brutal. What's nice is I think they give me 5+ devices that I can share my subscription with, so if anyone needs hooked up, I'll see what I can do.

Today's recommendations:

Not a big Taylor Swift fan, but I do like Bon Iver. They got together for a song on Swift's surprise album that dropped this week, and it's not bad. The vocals definitely have some Eddie Vedder/Pearl Jam vibes, which turned into me listening to the "Ten" album a couple of times over. Give the new song a listen- it's called exile, and it has almost 6 million views on Youtube in just 2 days.

What are the chances a fall sports season happens this year in Arizona

I know this is a question that has been posed before but given the rise in the number of cases here in Arizona as well as different mandates now for masks to potentially curve it, I want to get everyone's thoughts on whether they believe a fall sports season will be able to take place here in Arizona.

If you can, answer with a percentage first (ex: 50 percent, 25 percent, etc.) and then explain why you feel that way. I'm going to put it all together for a story on the website.
