POLL: Casa Grande 70 Maricopa 47

Our best defensive game against Maricopa: We followed our defensve principles, footwork, weak side focus, cuts denial without getting beat on dives and backdoor cuts, still must improve on locating first, box out, secure our rebounds and conduct a fundamental pass, then outlet and run our "Cougar Early Offense Break". I grade our execution and attention to detail : C+

1st quarter score: Casa Grande 14 Maricopa 6

2nd quarter score: Casa Grande 37 Maricopa 18

3rd quarter score: Casa Grande 53 Maricopa 23

Final Score: Casa Grande 70 Maricopa 47 Team Record: 6-2, 5 Road Wins.

Poor execution from our Team B in the 4th quarter with unforced turnovers (5), poor shot selection (6) and Team B must improve their offensive focus to our game plan.

Highlights:

Jose Olivarez, 18 pts, 5 rbs, better shot selection.

Gresyn Rogers, 16 pts but (6) unforced turnovers, becoming more comfortable with the varsity game, tempo and creating pressure attacking the basket and team defenses.

Jamil Davis, 12 pts, 11 rbs, 5 offensive rebounds, two for three point baskets.

Jacob Persoon, 6 pts, 5 assists great "floor" game.

Ty McKnight, 7 assists, better ball penetration, PG Team B player, CJ Andrews, 5 pts, great on ball pressure.

Next Games: Monday vs. Queen Creek, away game; Tuesday vs Highland @ The "U".

Sunnyside 93 Chartiers Valley 71

SS 20 19 35 19 93
CV 22 17 17 15 71

CV Leaders:

McConnel had 24 (16 in first half)
Wilkerson had 22

SS Leaders:

Duarte 31 points 14 rebounds and 4 blocks
Inclan 17 points 12 rebounds
Ozuna 16 points 5 assts
Lozoya 14 points 7 rebounds
Silva 6 points 8 assts and 5 steals

CV came out shooting lights out (6 threes in 1st quarter). They like to play fast and trap you all over the court. The boys did a great job of handling the pressure in the second half. Duarte had himself a great game.

Cienega vs Buena

Cienega 74
Buena 63

Cienega:Terrence Johnson 21, Daren Biggs 19, Isaiah Murphy 16

Buena: Springer 21, Reynolds 14, Holman 12

Score by qtrs:

Cienega 24 15 17 18
Buena 7 12 20 24

Tough sectional game. It was a game of runs, first by us and then Buena made a great push in the 4th!

Coach Johnson

Fouls, Fouls and More Fouls

After about a month of the season so far, it seems these new rule changes have really made a change. I wish I had the #s of how many fouls are being called and FTs attempted per game.

Tonight, Mesquite vs Higley had 78 free throw attempts. 78! That is insane.

We played a game tonight that over 60 fouls called and 64 free throw attempts. We shot 44 FT's in a game! It was a close game and they fouled late but still. Four or five guys fouled out with many others close.

I really thought this "point of emphasis" would be tight early and slowly loosen back up. If anything it is getting tighter as the season goes on, now any contact anywhere is being called, unless it is a dunk, which for some reason contact is not being called but that is another story. The hardest part is that every night is officiated so differently.

Look at the bright side, games are taking twice as long so concession sales are up. Should be interesting to see how it plays out the rest of the season.

Pueblo Transfer

Haven't seen the paper today but I got word something in there about an ineligible transfer has to forgeit games.

Violation forces Warriors
to forfeit 3 basketball games

Pueblo’s boys basketball team will forfeit its first three regular-season wins — against Sahuarita, Palo Verde and Pusch Ridge Christian — after self-reporting a violation this week, athletic director Brandon Sanders said. The Warriors used an ineligible transfer, who was thought to have been cleared, Sanders said.

Pueblo, coached by Kelvin Eafon, beat Walden Grove 87-42 on Tuesday night and hosts Catalina Foothills tonight at 7:30.

Sahuaro vs Sabino

SAHUARO 70, SABINO 47

Sahuaro 28 12 14 16 - 70

Sabino 10 14 8 15 - 47

SAH - Allen 2 2-2 6, Hall 4 0-1 8, Manzo 2 5-6 9, Yancey 1 0-0 3, Renfro 10 6-10 28, Lane 5 1-2 12, Detwiler 2 0-0 4. Team 26 14-21 70.

SAB - McBrayer 4 0-1 9, Capotosti 0 2-2 2, Lopez 2 0-0 5, Green 2 1-2 5, Fink 1 1-2 3, Markworth 1 0-0 2, Zaleski 2 4-4 9, Dixon 1 0-0 2, Walker 1 2-3 4, Mauerhan 2 0-0 4, Harward 1 0-0 2. Team 17 10-14 47.

You wouldn't think this game would get much hype with Sabino not off to a good start but then again Southern Arizona's number 1 player Nate Renfro turned 18 yesterday and Grand Caynon Coach Benson was in the house Nate decided to turn things up a bit. If you haven't seen Nate play your missing out, Lane posted on Twitter "Nate looked like he was playing NBA 2K" Nate had 28 pts and 17 Rebounds including 5 dunks, the first a reverse ally hoop, he was just better then everyone else on the court last night. His mom's birthday was the night before (she lives in Phx) he got her flowers and delivered them to her before the game, classy move from a classy guy. You just don't see enough kids like Renfro anymore. Good night, big game vs Tucson High Monday. That will be the big first test for Sahuaro. Lane had 12 pts and 7 Rebounds.

Friday Dec. 12 Game Schedule

Sure miss going to Globe this time of the year for the Copper Cities Tourney - longest running tourney in the state. I'll take Combs in this one.

Saguaro @ Arcadia should be a dandy - the Titans are pissed, and prolly tired.

'slope at Chaparral is intriguing - can SBT score 80?

Marcos at DV use to be a gigantic rivalry back in the day - miss those games also.

Is Moreau CA any good?

Friday Dec. 12 Game Schedule

Sunnyside 51 Arcadia 49

Sunnyside: 12 12 12 15 51
Arcadia: 13 17 4 15 49

Arcadia was led by Nichols. He had 25 points (13-15 FT) and Nelms 9 points.

Sunnyside was led in scoring by Inclan (13) and Ozuna (12). Duarte had 9 points and 9 rebounds (foul trouble all night). Silva hit a 3 with 3 seconds left to give us a 2 point lead. Arcadia got a halfcourt shot from Nelms that missed off the back of the rim. Very competitive game, glad we were fortunate enough to come away with the W.

Tuesday was 40's night

Markus Howard dropped 48 on 17-29 FG, 8-13 from 3, in a tough 95-83 loss to a very talented Chaparral team.

Brock Gardner scored 42 on 14-23 FG, 5-8 from 3 with 10 boards and 4 blocks in a 72-62 win over Skyline Prep.

SBT goes for 40 and doesn't even play the first half. That's crazy. Slope loses 81-78 to Cesar Chavez in 2OT.

Big time scoring nights. Guys who can hit from the perimeter and take advantage of these new rules and get to the FT line. Going to be some big scoring nights this season.

Chap over Perry - Player Takes

In the end Chaparral just played too sound for Perry. They were up by 9 points at half and kept complete control. The score of the game (95-83) confirms 2 things - Chaparral played a nearly mistake free game, and Markus Howard with 48 points can score from anywhere on the court. Chaparral also controlled the boards. I think Perry had just a couple second chance shots in the second half. They basically were betting on the first shot by Howard and help from Coby de Laveaga. Not a bad bet to make given the 48 and 17 points respectively, but without forcing Chaparral turnovers it was not enough.

Player Takes

Perry
Markus Howard - Soph -He is who I thought he was. He is impossible to guard because he has such a good handle and a knock down shot from anywhere on the floor. He is quick with both his hands and his feet. He was getting all the way to the basket, hitting running floaters, and was pulling up from deep outside. He can pull up and shoot off the dribble in the blink of an eye. I swear that sometimes he doesn't even have time to get his eyes up to the basket and basically aims his shot with his peripheral vision. He would have had more points if he didnt go down with a sore calf (assuming from the look of it).

Coby de Laveaga - Sr - He played very well. He looked taller than his listed 6-foot-1. Although he did not force a lot of turnovers against the disciplined Firebirds, he seemed to have a good sense of off-the-ball defense. He is very quick, but his fundamentals allow him to do a broad number of things on offense. He has a nice shot and can dribble well with both hands.

Kyle Van Haren - Jr - He is a good high school player and was the third best for Perry. He has the ability to run the point and game manage. He has a leadership quality about him and will continue to be an important piece for Perry.

Chaparral
Kenzo Nudo - Sr - Nudo caught fire in the second half with 22 points and 31 over all. He is a true leader out on the court. He was hitting his wide open outside shots and wasn't afraid to shoot the three with someone guarding him (but wasn't taking it up off the dribble). He does have a high release, but doesn't really shoot it with the ball on just the pads of his hand. Basically his form is consistent but it's not one of those forms where you just know it is going in. He has a very strong build. Oh and he threw down a fast break dunk HARD. I would even call it a tomahawk.

Colten Kresl - So - He had a nice second quarter with 12 points and multiple pull up shots. He can pull up and shoot off the dribble, which might even be his preferred shot. He is also just a nice play maker with a good IQ. He is another one with not the best quickness but just knows what he is doing.

Brandon Hoffer - Sr - Both an offense manager and scorer. He still has the ball handling skills that I saw from him as a freshman. He penetrates through quick changes of pace and can dish the rock. He has a low shot release but he can nail the outside shot.

Seniors Ryan Bayster and Sean Scanlon both did a great job of keeping Perry off of the boards. Like the rest of the Firebirds, they play disciplined and are reliable. Their size and solid play really balances things out for this team. Bayster was able to make strong post up moves and finished at the basket with consistency.

SBT scores 40pts in the 2nd half
