Basha Thread

Adam Beadle had a chat with Chris McDonald and Brodie Vehrs at Spring Practice this week.

Link: Spring Ball Interview: Basha HC/QB Duo Chris McDonald and Brodie Vehrs

I like Brodie Vehrs game quite a bit, and his statement that the playbook has been pared down by about 90% to just run similar plays out of 9-10 formations seems like it could make a dangerous offense even more effective. I did think it was interesting that Coach Mac didn't give in to the idea that the QB job is wrapped up- compete compete compete!

How do you think Basha will fare in 2025?

2026 Basha QB Brodie Vehrs Commits to NAU

NAU did not overlook the 5-foot-11, 189-pound quarterback. After finishing the season with just over 2,900 passing yards, 27 touchdowns and just two interceptions, Vehrs reported his first Division I offer from NAU on February 11.

Almost three whole months later, Vehrs announced his commitment to play football for the Lumberjacks on Tuesday evening.

When championships and graduation collide

It’s no secret May is a tough time for spring athletes. Many are competing for a state championship whether it be in track, boys volleyball, tennis, softball, baseball, etc. But this is also grind time for student-athletes, especially those who are seniors. Sure, testing may be over. But graduation is here, as well as the time to make a college decision whether it be athletically related or not.

So, I pose this question. How can the AIA avoid forcing athletes to choose between a state championship game and graduation. Both are extremely important moments in the lives of seniors, but we saw CDO’s softball players forced to miss graduation to play.

Personally, as a former athlete, I would choose the game. But still, many may not think that way.

Thoughts? Surely something can be done, right?

Casteel Thread

Spring Ball Interview: Casteel HC/OL Duo Joe Bushman and Bryce Greer

I'm fascinated by the region placement that takes Casteel out of the CUSD and gives them a chance to compete in the second half of the season- something they haven't been able to do in their time in the Premier region.

You can also do a lot of reading between the lines in the talks about a positive atmosphere. I think Bobby Newcombe is a brilliant coach, but sometimes voices don't match the ears they get matched up with- especially over time, and in a situation where your late season opponents are all monsters.

The Unknown Cowboy: Malik Charles Embraces Unique Route to the Big 12 Stage

Awesome story from @Zalvira about an Arizona high school basketball player who made the decision to pursue his father's NFL path- now on his fourth college and his second position, Malik Charles is ready to make his mark for Oklahoma State football

Higley Football Thread

Spring Ball Interview: Higley Head Coach Eddy Zubey

Higley was at 6A for two years and didn’t have a winning record in either season despite having multiple D1 athletes. This will be interesting, because I think they have a more favorable region placement, and played a much tougher schedule in 2024 than they used to play prior to their previous move upward.
