More evidence to eliminate high school basketball.

http://www.azcentral.com/story/spor.../?hootPostID=acab8e6fa62ea0a971613cd4df596ac7

The top two club teams merge creating the high profile club ball exposure that gets blue chip players their college scholarships. So why have regular high school basketball? With budget constraints you really have to weigh the value of a team sport like basketball, why not have intramural programs instead?

With the top blue-chip BKB athletes going to prep schools what's the value of a "state-championship" anymore, especially with 6 divisions as proposed by the new AIA allignments?

I can see football remaining as a feeding program and also baseball to an extent as well as the individual sports like wrestling and cross-country as they are inexpensive to maintain, but basketball may need to be eliminated......hate to say this this, but it is what it is.

With the top players going to prep schools high school hoops in AZ isn't as fun as it used to be. The system and society are totally F'd up and priorities are askew on a societal and individual level.

In all REALITY, kids like Bagley would get just as many offers playing for a high school team (Corona) as he would at bogus Hillcrest Academy. The Bagley family has cheated the state with their selfishness and contributed to the demise of a great institution.....high school sports in America.

Things change, I get that, but when club ball can better serve the interests of almost everyone who has a collegiate future, then let's do away with the cost of humoring the wannabes....nothing wrong with a good intramural program.

How many get cut from varsity these days?

Seems like club and all that goes into hoops that varsity is pretty well set the first week of practice, including who's already on the team, starters, rotations, sets, etc. Some changed need to be made with transfers, grade checks, etc., but that is usually figured out in advance of the official start of practice also.

Are there any coaches and programs out there that actually have to make varsity player cuts any more?

Glendale CC over Long Beach City College in Frank Garcia Tip-off Classic

The Glendale Gauchos Men's Basketball team opens up with a win over Long Beach City College 104 - 101. The Gauchos started off the game on a 14-2 run but LBCC would later climb back in the game and lead 41-38 at the half. The Gauchos regain the lead late in the 2nd half and hold a 3 point lead when LBCC hits a 30 footer to send the game into overtime. The Gauchos regain the lead in OT with 2 minutes left and never relinquish it to gain the opening season win.

Glendale was led by:

Isaiah Lopez (So. Agua Fria HS) 23 pts, 10 assts, 9 rebs
Isaiah Wilson (Fr. Cesar Chavez HS) 21 pts, 12 rebs
Tyler Bell (So. Cesar Chavez HS) 13 pts
Jacob Taylor (So. Mountain Ridge HS) 11 pts, 5 rebs
Delonn Stevenson (Fr. South Mountain HS) 11 pts, 6 rebs

Next up: Glendale CC vs. College of the Desert @ Frank Garcia Tip-Off Classic 7 pm (pacific time)

Hillcrest Questions

Somebody break these doos down for me - this program seems to have come out of nowhere to major prominence in this state and in the Southwest.

Who put this program together? Where are they? Break down the coaching staff? What is the school like? How come they seem to have figured it out when others trying this model have failed? Will they continue to succeed? Are they succeeding financially to stay in operation? How much does it cost? Do high school coaches dislike them like the Westwind debacle? Do they recruit locals? Do they provide better opportunities than normal high school ball? If so, why? Are they on track with the NCAA and compliance requirements? How many age divisions do they support, post grad only? And on and on...

I can't be the only one around here wondering these things.

Guess I could just read their web site, but that's not the inside stuff...
