Week 7 - who's going where?

After a couple weeks in the PXU, I'll be back in the North Valley. This time it'll be at Liberty as the Lions host Queen Creek. I think Jacob will also be there along with likely either Chilly or Cody. Queen Creek has been the surprise of the season in the 6A. The Bulldogs have overcome the loss of 4 D-I seniors, their coach, and their star quarterback. QC is perfect at 5-0 outscoring opponents 140-55. Dual threat QB Sebastian Tomerlin has 8 rushing TDs. Liberty is 4-1 with that loss coming at Chandler (in a game that was tied at the half). With Chaparral and Centennial remaining on the schedule, Liberty might need this one to return to the Open Division. The Lions are averaging 42.6 points per game. Running back Zach Wallace has scored 10 of Liberty's 31 touchdowns. Should be a physical game and looking forward to a good one!

Police arrested a Dysart High School security guard and assistant football coach

"An assistant football coach for a high school in El Mirage is in trouble with the law over accusations that he committed sex acts with a student on campus. Police said 24-year-old Nathan Jellicoe was arrested on Tuesday on the Dysart High School campus. Police said school officials called them after they learned of "inappropriate conduct" between Jellicoe and a 16-year-old student."

Jellicoe played college football at Ottawa University

Some interesting results this past week. Queen Creek over Williams Field was surprising. Is Salpointe eliminated after their loss to Saguaro? Strength of schedule may hurt them moving forward.

Where are people going for Week 6?

Heading to the PXU for a 2nd straight week. This time, it's Central HS (for first time since 2009) as the Bobcats (2-1) host Verrado (3-1). The Vipers are outscoring opposition 135-40 and QB Erick Santiago is averaging 225 yards per game. Sophomore Ryan Willey had 3 sacks in a win over Agua Fria last week. Central is enjoying a resurgence with QB Dominik Bagchi. The junior, who transferred from Notre Dame, has a talented receiver in senior Carter Allen. Allen went for 141 and 275 yards receiving in the Bobcats' first 2 games. Chilly thinks Central can still be "in the game" when we go to the 4th quarter. I'll be there to see if they can bounce back from a loss to Trevor Browne with a competitive performance.

Baseball Playoffs

I know for most of us, basketball and football are our two main sports… But I’m wondering if we have any fellow baseball fans in the forum?

I love baseball and love when the playoffs come around. I was born into a Cubs family growing up rooting for them and the Braves because they were the only team I watched when I lived down south and because I been to more Braves games…

With that being said, for those who’re following along who do you have in and winning the World Series? Naturally my biased pick is Atlanta vs Houston with the Braves winning, but I want to know who y’all have? I think the White Sox may spark a run, the Dodgers and Giants I think we all want to lose and the feel good story would be Tampa Bay vs Milwaukee.

Surprises from this week?

Did any results stand out to you as surprising this Friday?

That Kellis beat Kofa isn’t surprising by itself, but being 4-1 after winning one combined game in 3 seasons prior is a shocker. Ben Kullos seems to be doing an amazing job over there.

Also, Ironwood is having a rough year, but Apollo beating Sunnyslope and Ironwood back-to-back is big for the Hawks.

Week 5 - where are we going?

After 4 straight weeks of covering games in the North Valley, I'm heading down to Laveen this week for a look at Cesar Chavez (3-0) as the Champions host Desert Ridge (2-2). Hardly anyone expected anything from Chavez with all of the players that transferred out and a change in head coach, but the Champions have shown they have talent. CC is coming off a 34-13 win over Valley Vista and are rushing for 233 yards per game. The main backs are underclassmen Micah Boozer (junior) and Deven Highsmith (sophomore). Also looking forward to seeing sophomore Kezion Dia-Johnson, who I hear is electric in the return game. Desert Ridge's losses are to Hamilton and Highland. When the Jaguars don't play Premier Region teams, they shut opponents out (Ironwood Ridge & Dobson). DR's QB is sophomore Major Wootan and I'll get to see 2-way players KJ Miniefield and Lance Holtzclaw (Washington commit). I went to Chavez last year and had the place to myself (no fans were allowed and I was the only media there) when the Champions gave Higley a game that went right down to the wire. Looking forward to seeing the fans back for 2 teams that should put on a competitive affair (ranked #s 27 and 30 in this week's State 48).

The Ocho: Week 4

Even with Liberty and Saguaro loses, I don't know how I can drop either of them out of the Open quite yet. Just an order change for me this week. Lots of bubble teams though. It could be a really tight race for the 8-seed if a few of these teams have two losses.

1) Chandler
2) Hamilton
3) Basha
4) Cactus
5) Salpointe
6) Williams Field
7) Saguaro
8) Liberty

The Best Student Sections Week 4

Now that tonight officially kicks off Football for the Big three conferences, I want to know who y’all feel has the best student sections in the state? Which schools have that 12th man atmosphere with the students?

Right away what comes to mind are Liberty’s Uproar, O’Connor and The Nest, The Pack at Centennial, Pinnacle’s Crazies, Basha’s Court Side Savages…

Give me y’all’s best of the best!

Traditions

Any Arizona HS sports related traditions that come to mind for you guys?

1) On game days the Basha football players have one of their teachers wear their alternate jersey for the day. The teachers seem to love it and I think its very cool.
2)One that I think is also pretty cool but have yet to experience it. I thought for Seton Catholic basketball boys basketball the student section would stay quiet until the predetermined number of points were scored by their Sentinels and then they would go nuts. I forget the specifics of it but I like the sound of it.

Week 4 game coverage

Where are people headed this week?

I'll be at the big Saguaro-Chaparral tilt in Scottsdale (@ Chap).

Pretty much everyone has Saguaro in the Open, but if they lose this one and the Sierra Canyon game would that knock the Sabercats out? Chaparral has rebounded from its loss to Queen Creek with wins over Desert Mountain and Higley. The offense is clicking with 90 points in those 2 victories. Brayten Silbor has picked up from where he left off in 2020 and is averaging 305 passing yards per game. Saguaro last played on Sept. 10 and it was a performance that left many of us on the outside confused as it was 7-7 at the half before the Sabercats defeated ALA-Queen Creek by a 20-14 score. It is worth noting that ALAQC has scored 52 and 66 in its other two games, so the SagU defense is there. Javen Jacobs had 102 yards receiving last game and brought 2 punt returns back for scores in the opener. This could be the game that gets him those bigger offers we all think he deserves.

Other schools that could see their Open status improved or hurt by the result in this one: Queen Creek and Horizon.

Thinking Chilly will be out at this one with the Vlog. Sabercats-Firebirds WAYYYY out in front on this week's poll.

Tournaments

Ok this will be a tourney thread

I know of some of the tournaments with their teams so far...

Looking to find some more as always:)

To me this is the best and fastest way to cover the most ground..usually 8-16 teams at one spot!

Hard to beat!

If you know of a tournament---please post!
